Samsung Galaxy S9 Dual Sim

My old Samsung S4 is getting a bit long in the tooth and I need to upgrade. I am happy with Android and Samsung so I think a basic Samsung Galaxy S9 (64gb) will suit my needs. I have noticed that the dual sim versions are a bit cheaper than the single sim version at around $900 if you shop around.

However I am getting mixed messages on the use of the second sim slot - some say you can put in a sd card up to 256gb and others so in theory yes but in reality no.

Now I do not need a second sim but I do want a sd card slot. The single sim with sd slot S9 is about $50 more expensive than the dual sim version so if the dual sim version can use use a sd card in the second sim slot that is great.

So will the dual sim version work Ok with an SD card in the second slot? And if so, any reason why the dual sim card version is cheaper than the single sim version? What am I missing?

Can't comment on the Samsung dual sim, but I have an Oppo dual sim I bought for $300 in Rangoon and it works fine with two sims in place. In Burma I had both my Australian and Burmese sims working. I've recently changed providers here so it has both an inactive Optus sim and an active Telstra sim in it. The screen just shows both sims and you choose which one to use. It also takes SD cards, which double the memory.
Oppo is basically a Chinese Samsung, except my Oppo has a better camera than the Samsungs. You might like to compare prices. The Oppo should be cheaper.
Because I already own the phone, I am currently getting Telstra for only $18 a month, which is great.

They use the same slot for 2nd sim and SD card, at 64gig do you really need the extra capacity ?

No I haven't used the SD card yet, but it's nice to have it there.

Yes supposedly but other information says the SD card does not actually work in the slot. Are you basing your advice on personal experience or like me from what you have read/researched as it is confusing.

I guess I just spend the extra and get the sim card model.

I don't have an S9 but other Samsung phones use the same setup, I was setting up some phones for our cs girls and this was the case.

I would probs look at the hardware behind them. From the last time I looked, duel sim phones where more aimed at countries with bad networks and people who had a sim for messaging and sim for calling.

Not many dual sim phones in Aus and haven't been mainstream for ages.

Also, processors, connectivity hardware and the like will bring costs down to allow hardware for the added Sim capability.

Dual Sims set good for overseas travel. Keep your home sim in plus add a cheap local sim to avoid international roaming costs for local calls.

Be careful if you're buying a dual SIM phone for use in Australia as MOST dual SIM phones are only good for 2G on the second SIM and there's no 2G network in Australia. Great for overseas travel but no good here. There are a few dual SIM 3G/4G phones out there but you'll need to do some super sleuthing to find them as the 'dodgy' eBay sellers make a big deal of selling dual SIM phones but very often don't tell you that the second SIM slot is useless in Oz. (95% of the dual SIM phones advertised on eBay fall into this category so be careful).

Even with dual SIM 3G/4G phones it doesn't necessarily follow that both SIM's can be active at the same time to receive calls or that calls/data may operate on both SIM's concurrently.

One true dual SIM 3G/4G phone is the Motorolla G5 Plus. I have one of these with a 3G (Optus reseller) SIM in one slot and a Telstra 4G SIM in the other slot. It also takes a micro SD card as well as the two SIMs. It can receive calls on each SIM and default outgoing call/data prioritisation can be set. This can be easily toggled per call if need be. All in all a very good phone. My only 'complaint' would be that it has a 5+" screen and I would prefer a 4.5" screen.
