In the early (ish) days of position plotters on cray boats (1990's) that I did data collection aboard they used some sort of hard drive, that was really well protected, connected to a cheap screen and a cheap keyboard.

As some sort of 'protection' they used gladwrap over the keyboard coz sometimes their hands were a bit wet.

All this was situated in the wheelhouse.

They always carried a couple of spare monitors and keyboards, which were viewed as disposable.

The sellers of mapping software in the day always promised that data (marks recorded) could always be transferred to another system. The reality was somewhat different and if something went wrong all info was lost.

    cheers, DL

Panasonic Toughbooks are as good as it gets. Rock solid reliable under adverse conditions, touch screen and seals on all orifices including keypad keys. Not high powered so no good for gamers but perfect for real world use.

    Hi

Search for "industrial pc". Get a quote from an Australian retailer.
Sit down before you read the quote :-)

Otherwise just take one for each month and have them sealed in a heat sealed plastic bag before use :-)

And can get a reasonably quick second hand unit on eBay for a good price.
