I get 40 mB/sec through an iphone 5s on 3 / 4g, 40 gig of data per month for $55. Unlimited calls, etc and the best reception out in the boonies. Run the macbook off it as well.

    Just sayin', DL

The attraction of Starlink for me is the unlimited data - Skymuster prices get ridiculous before you even get close to the average Australian household data usage. Skymuster+ allows a lot of unmetered data - but excluded from this is the data type that makes up most of typical household's data usage - video.

My grandchildren have a proven track record of using a month's data in less than two days. No problem for them with three phones, three laptops and three Switches.

Speed is not the problem, data quantity and latency are. I plan to try and get Starlink next year after the Beta phase is finished, and hopefully with a second generation user terminal that uses less power and does not shut down in the summer hot spells.

I signed up for Starlink in June. to give you an idea how starlink works check out the satellite map found here Live Starlink Satellite Map you can go into set up and put your location in, footprint of satellites etc. It will show what Satellite you are picking off as they move across the sky. You can also see some of the long trains of satellites they have which i did see one morning with maybe 60 of them moving across the sky. It was amazing. On the website you will notice the ground stations which is needed for the signal to get back to earth and hence the reason why we can get it in NE Vic.

So whats the difference? We had skymuster through Activ8me. we paid $129 per month for 150Gb peak and 150 Gb off peak which is from 1am to 7am or similar so realistically we only had 150 Gb. This plan does not exist anymore with activ8. Having three kids they could smash that data in 9 days. I was always getting into them to get off the internet stop looking at videos, video conferencing their friends etc. Pretty sad in lockdown times where the kids can't connect with their friends. We paid extra for "sonic" speed. This was suppose to 25MPS download/5Mbps upload. We never saw anything like that. The skymuster satellite sits about 40,000km away. This increases the latency with the time taken for the signal to reach the satellite and return and causes lag. a good day on sky muster looks like this.

as you can see the speed is 7.82/3.92 even though we pay for 25/5. The latency is 262 milliseconds.

    And then along came Starlink.
As a speed comparison check this out.

speed has jumped to 154.97/33.73 Mbps. and latency is only 28milliseconds. The reason for this is the Starliink satellites are only 500 km away. Data is unlimited and we can all stream movies at the same time if we wish. This is life changing for us. so we pay $10 more a month and happy to do so.
the system is ridiculously easy to set up. Bolt it to the roof or leave it on its stand and run the cable to a power supply. The router connects to the same power supply and turn it on. Go to the starlink app on your phone and plug in your details and the dish moves and locks into satellites and then your done.

    Awesome!

To say you and your family are happy with it would be an understatement I guess!

We have all changed our browsing habits and getting full value from services like netflix. We used to stream a movie on Friday nights as a family night but wouldn't be able to watch two a week. Like I said, it has been life changing for us and even though in Beta phase it seems to be more reliable than skymuster. The kids can go nuts on it and connect with their friends which is good for their mental health.
Data on the app tells me that in the last 12 hours there was a network issue for 3 seconds (at 4.55am) and I have no obstructions. when I first got it I was waiting for the mounting bracket to screw it to the roof but it comes with a stand that you can peg down to the ground. Where I had it originally set up there was a few obstructions suggesting that I would lose signal for 45 seconds every hour, not that we noticed it. Sometimes it will lose connection and you go into the app and it says no satellites, next satellite in 9 seconds. (or however long, Usually under 10 seconds). We went off air twice last weekend for 10 minutes and 15 minutes whilst starlink techs probably did something but its the only time since we have had it.
Star link do say that there is a few gaps in their network but this will get better once they throw up more satellites and they of course have that ability. There is talk of new satellites having lasers like a microwave dish that can beam signals to other satellites which will improve the network also.

That website is very interesting when you zoom in and out and makes you wonder how much space stuff is up there.

Took me a week to get the dish and router and two weeks for the mount even though they were ordered at the same time.
