use the free version of macrium reflect to image the drive you want backed up to a backup drive either portable or fixed...
you can explore the image and copy and paste stuff out of it and blow the image over your drive or create the boot cd and blow a copy off that..
failing that if you just want particular folders backed up use karens replicator
Thanks to both of you. I sort of did what Arthur suggested. The restore of the backup did not put Firefox back in the system for some reason but all the information was there in the backup. I could see all the files and the backup of bookmarks etc using windows explorer. However when I went into the new Firefox to import the bookmarks and passwords from the backup drive it did not show any files (yes they are hidden but I do have show hidden files on) yet they were all there in Windows Explorer. So I switched to load bookmarks from a file and nothing. So I copied the relevant folder to the desktop and then all of a sudden it all worked - bookmarks back but only 9 out of 10 passwords but I am slowly working through that.
The issue remains though - a lot of this would be unnecessary if a simple good old restore point could be created like was available in the good old XP days.
Oh Arthur - I don't know anything about Firefox 90 being a Beta version - up to now it was auto update - well that is now turned off and no updates unless I have researched issues first.

Yes that is what I did initially and that is what caused me to loose everything at the time. I have v89 installed now - as I said I dont know anything about Beta but if you go to the Firefox site and check for updates is says V90 is the latest version and does not say anything about it being a Beta version.Quote:

It's kind'a difficult to download the full sized file for firefox from the official mozilla website, and to do so you need to go to the beta/nighly build sections and download it from there.
If you hit the download firefox link on the official website, it only ever downloads the install executable, and small, few hundred kilobyte, program that will download and install the latest stable release.
Interesting to read that you're getting different results.
I'll post the link to Mozilla official for 'ya to see if that shows anything different to what you've otherwise seen.

Blue Box download link is the one I refer too where you download a file that will download AND install firefox onto your system.
A few lines below is an alternative method to download where you see 'download options and languages'. If you browes into that area, you can download the full file(s) for other OSes and 64 and 32bit options for Windows, as well as either exe files or Windows MSI install file types. But, they are all v89 versions.
On most of their webpages for FF, way down the bottom of each page are the links to the beta, developer, nightly and other versions.
But like I said before, if you've had a previous version of a beta FF install, and simply update it(without knowing this) it will continue on the beta branch as it assumes you want this.
Once on the stable release branch .. you're updates will remain as the stable variety. So if you're now on v89, then expect an update to v90 in early July(should be 1st as they state, but not always).
