getting wi fi on a linux laptop

    To all the Linux gurus,
Have just put a new ssd on my latest laptop (that used to run windoz 10,taken that one out)
After figuring out what was going wrong with new ssd,I put Mint(cinnamon) onto laptop.
All was going OK with the install until I got to putting the internet on it.
It does not want to go to wi-fi for some reason. I can get on with ethernet cable, but ethernet cable doesnt reach across 15'
of space between router and where I sit for the laptop/tv/relaxing.
I can get into the wi-fi section, but there is no button to say connect.

Sooo, how does one connect to the wi-fi?

    TIA
    DG

did you tick the install non-free box when doing the install ?

that is usually needed for most of the wifi drivers etc

If still having issues, try a search with Linux Mint + "model laptop" + wifi". Should come up with help.

    How old is the laptop?

I use Puppy Linux in RAM via USB, and Wi-Fi connection was no issue on laptops some years old.

Went to buy a new laptop, asking if I could check Puppy could capture the machine and wi-fi worked on it before buying. Shop guy said no probs as he uses Ubuntu on his 2 year old high end gaming laptop to trouble shoot the franchise network.

We went through several laptops and brands, hi end and low end prices. Puppy could capture machines no probs but could not get wi-fi to work, ethernet only. Couldn't find any BIOS setting issues.

The shop guy, thinking maybe my Puppy was faulty, download the latest Ubuntu. He could capture the same machines no probs but was suprised at not getting wi-fi to work.

I bought a new (cheap end) laptop anyway thinking a solution is just a couple of searches away - wrong. Most threads on wi-fi issues were old.

Did find a mention of a new Windows security thing where Windows allows chip connection to wi-fi aerial, and when shutting down disconnects the aerial from chip. Something like that. Couldn't find other articles.

Will see if I can make sense of Incisors reference as it relates to Puppy.

Laptop is a Metabox(metabox.com.au) approx 16 months old.
Bought it without windoz on it, but put windoz on it from laptop I bought from them approx 2 years earlier.

Reading all the crap thats starting to come out of microsoft re win 11, I took out the m.2 ssd with windoz on it and put new
m.2 ssd in it to put Mint on it.

I'll have to go into Bios and get the specs for the intel wireless to see if I can get it to work, otherwise I'll have to get
    an external wi-fi.

Keep the suggestions coming as this is a new system that I'd like to learn more about.

    cheers

    Hi austastar,

I put Mint 19.3 on the laptop.
As explained in previous thread, I can get ethernet, but how do I enable wi-fi,there's no "enable" when you bring it up in
internet settings(its underneath the ethernet settings)
Is there a setting somewhere else I can use to enable wi-fi?

    Thanks
    DG

I think you will need to right click on the connection icon - but I am using the XFCE desktop, and it may differ on Cinnamon which I assume you are using.

Hi guys, Here's some screen shots of whats happening when trying to connect with wi-fi.

Sorry if there upside down, put them in right way up tho..

Is it worth removing the 3gb that I have on the ssd and trying to do it again, I might have pulled the dvd out before I downloaded
    all the required drivers etc,etc.
I let it go until it booted up the first time and maybe there was still a bit left to do on the software side so that I dont have this problem.

    All help gratefully received.
