Free AVG is about to die - what else is there

The free version of AVG is not going to be supported from early in the new year and if you and to keep AVG you will have to buy and subscribe. Well thr reason I was with the free VG was because I was that I have had subscriptions with providers such as Norton and the service sucked, they ripped me off with the subscriptions and their products were not all that good - caught a virus but never have with AVG.

So Given I do not want to pay - does anyone have any suggestions for a good free anti virus package. (I am covered for spyware etc)

    Thanks

I have this as backup for AVG and seems to work OK.

    http://download-antivir.com/

Has actually picked up a few trojans and downloaders that AVG didn't.

    Gazza,

Thats what I thought as well AVG7.5 free edition is available at http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5

Just note the Update of AVG 7.1 to 7.5 notes at the top of the page

Still seems to work OK - whether it will stop working sometime in the future I'm not sure, but OK for now.

I use the paid for version of AVG and find it very good. On two other machines in the house I use Avast Antivirus. It has a free version as well and works very well.

In my experience AVG is no better or worse than others at finding virus'. They all seem to miss the odd something unfortunately. The biggest issue I've had with friends with free AVG is they are usually slack at doing updates and so they fall behind and get a virus.

I just think the whole paying for anti-virus software thing stinks. What they should do is really (and I mean REALLY) come down hard on the *&^%$#@ jerks that do the programming, spamming, phishing etc.

Another sugestion is go to www.bittorrent.com and download a cracked version of a full program of your choice and never have to pay again....not that I would do that

My experience has shown that Free AVG is pretty damn good. My brother (MIS Manager at a Defence contractor) did some tests against other well known Anti Virus apps and it came up trumps. Just make sure that you have it do automatic updates.

You also should have some Anti Spyware software e.g. Ad-Aware or Spybot.

And don't forget to run a full scan of your PC on a monthly basis.

was wondering the same thing when the pop-up appeared on the screen, but after reading the fine print ,all you have to do is download the newer version of the "FREE" version, and hey presto .all is good again

also ,there is an option of the spyware program as well
