Depends on whether your DVD player can play AVI's and XVid/Divx's though. A standard DVD disc uses differently encoded (MPEG2 in VOD/IFO files) files, which is defined in the standard so all players play them...later ones aimed more at home multimedia often can play "computer" media files too. If it doesn't say on the front of the player a quick Google on the make and model number should tell you. Otherwise, you need to re-encode the files (Messy, slow and will further lose quality) or just d/l DVD images (.ISO's) in the frst place and burn them in Nero using the Recorder/Burn Image menu option instead.
if you can got your computer within cable length of you tv you could get a tv-out card, (or dual-out, same thing more or less) then just play them from your computer onto your tv screen with the aid of a couple of cables.
Or buy a dvd player that reads AVI files there are a few about and dont cost that much more than standard, then there is no converting at all.
Failing that look for software the converts AVI to VOB files. Vob is the DVD file standard. DVD Santa is one such program but I can't vouch if it's any good. There are bound to be lots of others. Once in VOB format they can be burned straight to CD/DVD.

I did this last week when the copy of 300 i got failed while converting to dvd file so i just put the case next to the tv plugged into my av amp and used my wireless kb and mouse on the coffe table.
I have since moved my pc to within 2.5 m of the tv so i will be waching a lot more movies this way.
A program called ConvertXtoDVD will convert most formats to DVD format
