    in some cases I get an option to download from an australian site,,
    apart from being patriotic
    is there any other benefit,, speed etc?

    many of the bigger isps have large proxy caches and some even mirror big sites.

    a lot of the files can be free downloads if pulled locally.

    is one reason i house aulro in a pipe networks rack, should be free traffic to most people.. :P

    Downloading from the internet depends on several factors; all things being equal, (which they never are) Australian download should be faster.
    In real terms of download speed from Australia as apposed to say the UK or USA would be negligable at best.
    Unless as inc says you are downloading from a pipe network or from your ISP it will not matter that much.

    So..... no benefit really
