Rave and oziexplorer and i am about to try crossover to see if they will run in the mac side...
I would have moved to Mac or one of the Linux variants at home long ago if there was support for a few (essential) and little known apps I use and need.

All the big stuff is fine these days, but most vendors writing things like GPS support programs, ballistics program,s for my shooting, and other similar things will never do anything more than Windoze.

For non-performace critical stuff, why can't they just write it in Java to be OS independent?!

I have a free copy of Vista with my MS Action Pack subscription, and I haven't even bothered installing it months after I got it...says it all really. And I've been an NT fan since v3.1, and a Windwos user since v2.0! They have so lost the plot with their bloatware of late it's not funny...

I haven't even rebuilt my home SBS/Exchange server since it trashed itself in the shipping when we emigrated, and I think I'm actually going to go and have a play with the IBM stuff now....

I know a Mac can run Windows as a dual boot, or in a full Windows emulator, but is there anythign that can emulate enough of Windows to keep very simple, little apps happy on a per-app basis, without the overhead of a full virtual machine? Things like a simple GPS or Ballistics program which doesn't need multimedia, directx or any of the other heavyweight subsystems? If yes, I'll be off a for a Mac tomorrow.

That will be second on the list after finding a friendly apple owner who uses either of the above and will quickly see if my ballistics stuff will install and run...otherwise, a v expensive toy!

I use Crossover Mac on a 17" iMac Core Duo (previously a user of it under Linux). It has no problems with MS Office and I have successfully test-played one of my Windows (Valve / Steam) games on it although it was a little slow. If your software is CPU or GPU heavy and speed is critical (like my action game!) then you would be better off with boot camp or sticking with Windows.

Otherwise I live in Darlington so if that's convenient and you want to try your ballistics app out on the machine then PM me.

One advantage of Crossover over Parallels is that you don't need a Windows licence as it simply mimics the APIs.

it isnt a clone of oziexplorer, it is like a GIS program that will use ozi files eg track log files etc.

it is supposedly very good at doing 3d profiles and rendering.

i had a copy at one stage but lost it beofre installing it when i lent my external drive to customer to help him out and he bounced it off the deck.. wasnt happy :P

and oldfarts memory has kicked in and i cant even remember its name...

Bit buggy on Windows still, I'm finding. But way faster than IE7 bloatware
