That's pointing to the PC with the wireless card being the "weak link" then if the router is known to work well with another device at greater distance.

What do you get signal-wise if you put the laptop where the PC is?

    My question, too.

It could also be the slate.

And does the PC have to beam through the case to get to the access point?

or... you can roll your own cantenna...

I use one at the pool area in my condo where my flat is on the 14th floor - improves the wifi signal there from very weak to average (distance is well over 100 metres from the antenna sitting on the window sill)

Well, short of the card in the PC being magically in a dead zone while only a few cm away, I'd say that's pointing to either a very broken card or screwed drivers/install. Have you got another one you can try?

Don't know if this will make a difference or not, but have you tried switching the router, etc. to broadcast/receive on 802.11b only.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/802.11

The maximum range of 802.11g devices is slightly greater than that of 802.11b devices, but the range in which a client can achieve the full 54 Mbit/s data rate is much shorter than that of which a 802.11b client can reach 11 Mbit/s.
    Cheers
    Simon
