only one sure fire way of not getting spam and it works !
use at least two yahoo/hotmail accounts one for every day trash, mail lists, free stuff, free software registry, internet stuff and just crap in general.
Every now and then you just go and delete everything.
The other you give to NO ONE unless you know them and I mean no one. No "public" forums, (PM's are OK), no estate agents, no prize draws, no job applications, etc, etc
I done this with Yahoo and didn't get ANY spam for about two years then I got a bit lax and used it for other stuff and now I get spam but only maybe 2-3 a day. I dont know if thats good or bad?
It's really the only way.
As for SPAM filters they are a double edged sword, get one that's too lax it lets crap through get one thats too tough then you just lost an email from your aunt sally.
Virtually all free/shareware spam filters are just varying degrees of being crap.
Some are better than others but if you really dont want any spam and not loose any emails you either have to pay bucks for a specialist service or keep your email address like your phone number and be choosy who you give it too.
Before anyone tells me about random email address generators yes I know about them but if you are lucky it wont hit you for a year or two.
AND.... NEVER, EVER, EVER reply to spam, even the ones that say "click here to stop getting this email' once you do that you may as well just publish your email address to www.pleaseSpamMeLots.com ;)
I have 2 main emails (I have extras from uni, etc.) and one of these is my 'real' email. The others mostly go through gmail, which I've set up to forward real emails through to my real one. The gmail filter (happens before the forwarding) is pretty good - I rarely see junk mail come through to my real, and then Thunderbird comes along and kicks it into the junk bin (which I then check).
So as above, everyday hand one out collects heaps of stuff goes through 2 lots of filters, and no probs.
Which means I'm at a complete loss as for which (stand-alone) program to recommend! :(:)
I use Spamfighter.
It's free and works great.

Thanks for that, will go and check some of them out. Hasnt been a big problem but now that I have email capabilities with my new phone I dont want to be downloading crap instead of stuff to do with my business. PLus I dont need a bigger winky :D, or interested in how humans and animals get it ORNNN etc etc. So if I can block that rubbish will be a happy man,
