Unfortunately the answer is No. Office 2003 and 2007 are the only two that will work. The other options are the open source type.

For home use you can get the education priced version of office for a bit over $200 if you don't want to go down the OpenOffice path

From what I've read here you should have no problems with Office, but might see some issues with Outlook (if you use it). Word, Excel, PowerPoint et al should work fine though.

    Hey Dave,

If your daughter has a valid University email address you can get Office Ultimate 2007 for $75AUD. Microsoft has a special offer for University students at the following website:

    MS Office Offer

I'm at the Uni of Tas and took this offer up last year. It's legitimate and you won't find a cheaper price for Office.

    Cheers,

Is 2007 backward compatible ie if I produce a document in 2007 can it be read and modified in say 2003 version?

If you save the document in compatability mode it is. This basically means saving files as ".doc" rather than ".docx". You do it by choosing "Save As" and selecting ".doc" as the file type.

It will work fine, contrary to what some are saying. I have Vista Home Premium and Office 2000 Professional and it works fine on my new laptop, no issues at all. There are a few conflicts with some other software and games. Damn Microsoft, you would think by now they would make sure of backwards compatability and adequate drivers.
