correct JPEG size when attaching to post

How the hell do you get the correct JPEG sizing for an attachment upload?

EVERY TIME I reduce a JPEG to the required pixel count for attachment according to the pop up, the thing says HA gotcha!!! too big.

Then I reduce to say 480 by whatever and it uploads. The pixel count never agrees. It makes it an utter PITA to upload images.
Is it my HP software or what?

If you're uploading the image as an attachment, then make it no wider than 640 pixels, no taller than 480 pixels, and make sure the filesize is no larger than 130 KB.

Alternatively, upload the pics to a photo sharing site (Flickr, etc) and then copy the image's URL into the "Insert image" dialog.

    Philip,

Find and download Irfanview. It's freeware and great for manipulating pics. Better still, it has a batch command so you just point to a directory with huge pics in it, select 800 pixels on one side, keep ratio, and off it'll go converting and resizing.

I have the software from HP and its pretty good.
My problem is that even if I select a number of pixels less than that specified eg 520 x 440, the picture still comes up at 190Kb or similar.

I have to guess the number of pixels to get to 130KB, but seeing I do not want it too small I invariably have to have 2 or so attempts and the HP software does not gve you the file size, so I have to save it then look at properties..

So what you're trying to do is upload you avatar, not just pics for us to see?

No just a common or garden JPEG like the dyno chart I attached to my posting in "technical" titled "had my RRC dynod today".
Look it's not a huge issue just a nuisance. I do not add attachments often enough to remember 480 pixels wide is about the go.
I thought someone might say" look save them in low quality" or something, but I have always thought that pixels are pixels and that a pixel in this forum should be the same number of KB as a pixel in my HP software.

You can add 800 x 600 just fine.

You can use whatever photo site you need but try this:

Go to ImageShack® - Image Hosting
Click on "browse" and find your pic on your HDD.
    Click Open.
Tick resize and choose the setting you want.
    Click "host it"

Once uploaded, scroll down to the first link below your picture, called "hotlinks for forums (1)".
    Copy the link.
Paste it into your AULRO post.
    You're done!
