Andy, that's the old Telstra charged WiFi at Maccas and lots of other hotspots. I'm talking of the new system, which is, apparently, free (but not in WA until January 2009. ).

As of the 24th October there are 20 restaurants live and converted from the old Telstra "pay for use" Hotspot model to the new McDonalds's FREE WiFi offering.
The Free WiFi service will be available in both stand alone and food court based McDonald’s where the current Telstra “pay for use” wireless service is deployed. That is locations where the Telstra BigPond wireless service, that is broadcast with a network name (SSID) of “Telstra”, will be converted to the Free WiFi service
