I had the same problem, however mine was from an info@ address. I suggest contacting your ISP. For godness sake be careful what you downloasd to fix the "bugs" many so called tools are actually bugs in themselves.(a bit like a Hilux pretending to be a Land Rover!) Hijackthis is a fantastic tool if you are competent enough to use it. Best of luck.

It could be a trawler bot picked up your email address from a web site.
Or your contact info was sold to another vendor.

I did a google of your business name, nicollengineers.com.au
and got this staight away,
Nicoll Ross J & Associates - East Brisbane, QLD - whitepages.com.au

My partner has this problem too, and it comes back to the bots trawling over her business website, and either guessing email addresses, or finding an email link.
It's very frustrating, as your address or site can end up on a 'blacklist / banned site list', making it difficult to get legit business traffic.

You need a good spam filter at your ISP to stop most of the spam reaching you.

I'm afraid I don't really understand how it all works. My ISP is Optus, anyone have any experience with their spam filter (good/bad) ??

I registered the domain name through Melbourne IT some years ago and the son of a mate, who's a bit of an IT whiz, has organised it for my emails (is this hosting?)
Costs me a carton/annum .. :D

What's actually involved in (hosting?) a domain name ??

part 3 - I'm not really sure there is much you can do to 'stop' bogus use of your email address (not once it's been harvested/stolen/sold)

It's really not my field of expertise either, I'm just aware of these problems too.

Looking into the advanced settings of AVG, it looks like I can do something about it, but I'm out of my depth. Any tips?

The text line (if it's too fine) says ... Allows the blocking of spammers who spoof your domain name or other domain names. For example, spammers often use the recipient's domain name as the From:domain name. This list allows you to specify which mail servers are allowed to use which domain names in the From:address.

A good ISP would have suitable blockers on their servers, then it's your choice if you allow the not so obvious stuff through.

Me, I use Internode who are a professional ISP.
