    Pedro,

    I assume you have A/V turned off and are running it under an administrator account....

    Other than those basics, I'm with Inc.... more info please...

    On a positive note one of the boys at work just loaded it to his laptop - he said it made Vista behave far nicer...

    I'm a masochist.... I'm busy playing with Windows 7 RC...

    I had a similar issue ages ago when I tried SP1 beta version (or pre-release or whatever it was called), but real SP1 we've installed on about 20 machines with no hassles.

    From memory there is a known issue with AMD processors. Not sure how that manifests itself as my offsider at work has looked after those ones. I've got a feeling that you have to install some patch before the service pack but could be completely wrong.

    Any chance it could be a corrupt download - not sure how elegantly it would handle that. Is there a checksum you can run against it to confirm that its OK, or get another copy from a PC magazine DVD or similar.

    FWIW - SP1 didn't fix any of my Vista issues.
    Windows 7 on the other hand is looking OK so far...

    I cant fault Microsofts customer service,,

    within 2 hours of my distress call,,

    this arrived--

    Dear Peter,

    Thank you for contacting Microsoft Online Support Service. My name is Ann, and I am glad to work with you. For your reference, the case ID for this service request is SRX1101862243. You can contact me by sending an email to
    v-30amen@mssupport.microsoft.com with the case ID in the subject line.

    From the problem description, I understand that Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) failed to install via Windows Update 5 times. Two computers are on a wireless network with the same license. If there has been any misunderstanding, please let me know.

    Peter, I appreciate your time and effort on this issue, and I understand the inconvenience you have experienced. Please be assured that I will do my best to help you.

    During the Windows Vista SP1 installation, one of the most common causes of failure occurs when a third-party application holds open a file or locks a file that the Service Pack installation program has to use. For example, a third-party antivirus or antispyware application may cause this problem. If you are running any third-party applications such as Spyblocker, Internet or web accelerators (programs designed to boost the speed of the Internet connection), security or anti-virus programs (McAfee, Norton, etc.), I recommend temporarily disabling or shutting them down during the troubleshooting process. Please be sure to re-enable them once the process has completed.

    If your original system is an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) version preinstalled in the computer, I recommend contacting the computer manufacturer before installing Windows Vista SP1. Please confirm with the manufacturer if there are any updates available for the software applications and hardware drivers installed in the computer prior to installing Windows Vista SP1. Updating software and hardware drivers will reduce the chance of any unexpected problems that may occur during the installation of Windows Vista SP1.

    After that, I recommend running the System Update Readiness Tool. System resources, such as file data, registry data, and even in-memory data, can develop inconsistencies during the lifetime of the operating system. These inconsistencies can be caused by various hardware failures or software issues. In some cases, these inconsistencies can affect the Windows servicing store, and they can cause software updates not to work. We can run the System Update Readiness Tool to resolve these inconsistencies. When the System Update Readiness Tool detects incorrect manifests, files, or registry data, it might replace the incorrect data with a corrected version. Please follow the steps below.

    Step 1: Run the System Update Readiness Tool
    ====================================
    1. Please download the System Update Readiness Tool from the link below according to the System Type:

    System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista 32-bit
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2889489c-ee87-4607-8aa5-812e8078ab27&DisplayLang=en

    System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista 64-bit
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=14f76773-007c-493f-bece-243bc21ac73d&DisplayLang=en

    2. Double click downloaded file to run the System Update Readiness Tool. Then restart the computer and install Windows Vista SP1.

    If Windows Vista SP1 still cannot be installed, I suggest downloading the Standalone Installer and installing it in Clean Boot Mode.

    Step 2: Download Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Standalone Installer
    ================================================== ==
    1. Download Windows Vista SP1 from the link below according to the System Type:

    Windows Vista Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista 32-bit (Size: 544.3M
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=f559842a-9c9b-4579-b64a-09146a0ba746&DisplayLang=en

    Windows Vista Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista 64-bit (Size: 873.0M
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=86d267bd-dfcd-47cf-aa76-dc0626dcdf10&DisplayLang=en

    2. Please save it on the Desktop.

    If you have a dial-up connection, I believe it will be inconvenient to download the Standalone Installer due to its large size. If you have a US or Canada address, we can order a SP1 DVD for you free of charge. In order to deliver the DVD to you as soon as possible, I need to verify your current shipping address.

    Name to ship to (if not you):
    Street address:
    City:
    State:
    Zip Code:
    Phone (for the shipping company to use, should they need to contact you):

    If you don't have a US or Canada address, please order the SP1 DVD from the following link:

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/bb738089.aspx

    Step 3: Install Windows Vista SP1 in Clean Boot Mode
    =========================================
    Please disable all startup items and third party services when booting to avoid conflict when installing Vista SP1.:

    1. Click "Start", type: MSCONFIG in the search box and press Enter.

    Note: Please click "Continue" if the "User Account Control" window pops up.

    2. Click "Services", check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray).
    3. Click "Startup", click "Disable All", click "OK" and restart the computer.

    Note: Temporarily disabling the Startup Group only prevents the startup programs from loading at startup. This shouldn't affect the system or other programs. We can manually run these programs later.

    4. Please double click the downloaded Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Standalone Installer and follow the instructions to install Windows Vista SP1.

    To restore the computer to use a Normal Startup, repeat step 1 above. Then click "Normal Startup" on the General tab, click "OK", and then restart the computer.

    If the issue persists, please collect a screenshot of the error message and the latest System Information for further research. Please be sure that the information does not contain any of your confidential and private information. It’s for troubleshooting purposes only. Thank you for understanding.

    How to capture a Screenshot
    ======================
    1. When the error appears, please press the Print Screen key (PrtScn) on the keyboard.
    2. Click "Start", point to "All Programs", point to "Accessories" and then click "Paint".
    3. In the Paint program, click the "Edit" menu, click "Paste", click the "File" menu, and click "Save". The "Save As" dialogue box will appear. Type a file name in the "File name:" box, for example: screenshot.

    Note: Make sure "JPEG (*.JPG;*.JPEG;*.JPE;*.JFIF)" is selected in the "Save as type" box. Save the screenshot file to the Desktop.

    System Information
    ===============
    The System Information can provide us with more information about the current status of the system. I would like to check it for you. Please send it to me using the following steps:

    1. Click "Start", type "MSINFO32" in the Search Bar and press Enter to start the System Information.
    2. On the popup window, on the menu bar, click "File", and click "Save", type a file name and then choose NFO as "Save as type", click “Desktop” on the left pane, and click Save.
    3. Right-click on the exported file, choose "Send To" -> "Compressed (zipped) Folder".

    Please send these zip files to
    v-30amen@mssupport.microsoft.com.

    Note: When attaching files to emails, the process will vary depending on the email application being used. While you are composing the email, most applications will provide you with either an "Attach" button or a Paper Clip Icon to click in order to attach a file. After clicking this button/icon you must browse to the file you wish to attach and select it by either double clicking it or clicking it once and then clicking "Attach".

    After obtaining the information, I will research it and get back to you as soon as possible. Please take your time with the steps and let me know the results at your earliest convenience. If there are any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me.

    I look forward to your reply.

    Best Regards,

    Ann

    Me too - actually I think Pedro's post with the Microsoft help letter is rather funny (although I feel for Pedro ) - I'm going to print it off and show it to the people here at work who are still rubbishing me for getting an iMac.

    In all the people I know with macs (and that's lots) the only person I've ever heard of that re-installed a Mac OS was my nephew because he couldn't get the printer to work. I'd had enough of hearing about it and went over with a new USB cable and had it going in 10 minutes..
