My old FX card won't work as it only has the VGA output .... You have prompted me to read the instructions to my old vid card (MSI .. NX8500GT series) that has a DVI output .. that says if you want to convert the DVI to a HDMI ... that you have to make a connection from the vid card to the motherboard ... My mother board has a section of pins that have HDMI printed on them

    Food for thought

I havn't had any issues with mine. HDMI into the LCD TV works a treat. Normal coectio into the 24 inch wide screen LCD monitor works a treat also.

Card installed ... Good job that I took it to the computer shop ... as it was found that I needed a much larger power supply

    Final effect was ...no difference

Turns out that those pins are for "sound" when running DVI

Mine works fabulous on any LCD computer monitor ... it's just the TV LCD that I can't get the resolution to work properly ... only 1380 x 768?? is optimum

On the efforts of wanting to run Windows XP and work a CAD program ...
Well, so far, all I can conclude ... is that you can not get the technology of true 1920 x 1080 resolution on a TV LCD .... from a PC

BUT .... I still have a 900mm wide work area on my CAD package of ... this translate to a (approx) A1 sheet of paper on my screen

Look around google for HDCP (high definition content protection) over HDMI and DVI. If one or another device in the video stream is not compliant with HDCP then HDCP will downgrade the video resolution. It is supposed to stop HD dvds (ie Blue Ray @ 1920*1080) from being viewed on "unsafe" monitors where, god forbid, it might be copied.

I don't know if this is a factor in your case but many people complain about unintended side effects of HDCP with TVs and devices like PCs and game consoles.

I get 1920*1080 from a PC on my TV. Maybe I'm just lucky and maybe your just unlucky.

Ferret ... I am VERY interested to see your setup if possible

When I had the 1gig ATI radeon 4850 vid card .. I hooked it up to the following brands
Sony ... hated the connection of any resolutions
Hisense ... hated the connection of any resolutions
    Toshiba ... works best at the 1360 x 768
    Samsung ... works best at the 1360 x 768

George ... I'm scratching my head a bit ... sorry to be a PITA ... but if you could confirm

...as you know, you can write the word "Two ... too ... to" same sound / different meanings

My LCD TV is also the Samsung
So ... can you confirm the following bit, please ....
Is your PC / control panel / vid card / settings ... set to 1920x1080 ... and can you see the windows XP desktop icons OK ... + which / what vid card are you using??

My samsung also registers the 1920x1080 on the TV screen when it fires up .... BUT the vid card in the PC can only be set to the 1360 x 768 to view the XP desktop properly

Out of interest, have you checked the refresh rate of the video card? And using the HDMI3 input?
