Maybe not. I believe Apple have just redefined what a gigabyte is, ie how many bytes actually comprise a gigabyte. The merits or otherwise of this I'll let others debate, since their not the only ones doing it.

i am about to load Snow Leopard......if you don't see me back online tonight you will know why
last month I threw out the old PC and bought a 24" iMac ... Wow :o absolutely brilliant.
Ordered Snow Leopard today for $14.95, a reduced price Apple offer if you bought close to the role out date (28 Aug I think)
with 640GB HDD who cares about another 7 being freed up, but I'll take it :p
I'm about to install the Mac Box Set. Wish me luck :o
I just opened the packaging. It comes on one DVD :o
Well everything is upgraded now. Snow Leopard, ilife and iwork. The only thing that isn't done is iphoto is going through all our photos and recognising faces...
Strangely we've gone from 6gb free to 14gb free. I'm not sure whether that's due to change in GB sizes but it looks like the pie available is much bigger.
