Will VPN allow access to file on Server (via mapped drive)?

Am pulling my hair out with this. SQL Server is my main expertise, so right out of my depth here.

Anyway - I want someone in a remote office to have access to some files in a folder on my Windows 2008 Server, preferably via a mapped drive in Windows explorer. They are also running Windows 2008 server, btw.

    I have:
o added the Role on the server for Remote Access Client & set it up with the defaults suggested for a VPN.
o Set up the user as a local user
o Allowed them dial in access
o given the new user permission to the shared folder I want them to see
o Set up the port forwarding on my router (via TCP 1723 and 47 (GRE))

They can connect and authenticate, but nothing much else. I can see them connect via the RAC utility.

They can't ping my server, even with Symantec turned off at both ends.

They can't map a drive in explorer (trying \\MyServerName\ShareName).

Is what I want to do do-able, or do I need something else apart from VPN set up?

    Thanks
    David

Something else I just noticed: Windows Firewall with Advanced Security seems to be on. I would have thought Symantec was doing the firewall work......

When I have done it, I have given the vpn connection a different network address (if the main network is 192.168.1.XXX I will set the vpn to hand out 192.168.25.XXX to each end of the connection for example) Then to connect to the share I type \\192.168.25.XXX\sharename

I don't know if this helps but it was the only way it worked for me

OK - thanks for that - will give it a try.

I also turned off the Windows firewall but that made no difference.

It is very frustrating to see the connection there, yet not be able to browse the hard drive

If I do an IpConfig command on the server, I get this:

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 3:
    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
    Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::f91e:826d:3cf3:62f7%13
    IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.10
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

PPP adapter RAS (Dial In) Interface:
    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
    IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.51
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

Tunnel adapter Local Area Connection* 8:
    Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected
    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :

Do the subnet masks have to be the same (i.e. one ends in .0 the other in .255)

Focus on getting pinging working as your first step, if you can't ping you wont be able to map a drive since it needs the IP connectivity in place to work over.

Agree that it'll be easier to troubleshoot the vpn connection if you put it on a different IP address range as it'll make it much clearer what traffic is to be sent over the VPN to the remote machine and make the routing much more simple.
