For what it's worth, I have a mate who has been an IT guy for yonks and using the release candidate of Win7 for a few months. He just can't stop banging on about it. When I told him my plans of waiting until the new year before considering an upgrade from Vista 64 he just said flat out "don't wait". The way he explains it is more that Win7 is like Vista SP3 (or 4 or 5). You should just "get it" as a necessary upgrade, not a discretionary one. As for MS charging $199 for it, well that's just robbery given what it's replacing (fixing). Surely a $29 upgrade for Vista users would go a fair way to erasing some of the hangover and restore customer sentiment.

....the people are pretty? ... or the Macs are pretty?

My take on all of this is the literally tens of billion of dollars actually saved by business in reduced transaction costs achieved by the virtual worlwide adoption of "MS O/S" and MS Office "dynasties" ...the fact that people can communicate... by swapping documents in all facets of business, education etc makes all the other arguments pale into insignificance. Good on'em (MS) for protecting their competitive advantage... the benefits to the world-at-large far outweigh the cost!

It was three years ago I last used XP. My whole experience with M/$oft had been one of time lost to battling a crap OS to do what I wanted, viruses, malware, spyware, reformatting reinstalling, phoning M/$oft in Asia somewhere and getting their blessing to use a OS I owned. But hey you don't know anything different do you!....

So defmec do yourself a favour download/burn a CD (Download Ubuntu | Ubuntu) and try out Ubuntu Linux, (you can even get a CD mailed to you: https://shipit.ubuntu.com/). As a live Operating System CD you can keep the wife happy, just pop in the Ubuntu CD, (a computer on a disc!) and boot at startup to use....surf the web, do your banking, use all functions of the OS without installing.

Or alternately install it on the your PC as a dual boot (installing is painless so easy for anyone, completed system in 20mins), drivers selected and provided for your PC, hundreds software preselected for linux provided within the system, NO NEED TO HUNT THE WEB for operating software anymore.

Ubuntu is better and easier to use than any XP, Vista, Windose 7. NO MORE VIRUSES, SPYWARE, MALWARE anymore....ajust, customised, Ubuntu to your hearts content. You'll find a replacements for all your Windo$e requirements, there's a great Ubuntu Forums who will help with any problems. The best is there's no need for you personally to buy that Mac, or a new PC, because Ubuntu is FREE, drivers, all software you'll ever need, FREE everything is opensource.

You'll then one day you may realize your no longer battling to get everything in line and for the first time enjoying using your computer....

Okay - here are my recommendations -
If you have vista brand new without any updates get w7.
If you have vista and with all the updates, stay for now.
If you have vista or xp and hate them then upgrade.

been running Windows7RC & Windows7 for several months.
Its what Vista should have been, go for it.

W7 OS can be bought for about $140 via the internet.
If you are or know a student you can get it for about ermm $40 or $50 forgot which. Direct from MS.

It runs faster than Vista, Vista is pretty crap.
IMO XP or Windows7 both different animals and both will have a place for quite a few years yet. XP with be the Windows98SE of the future

And Vista will be the WindowsME (Mistake Edition) of the future. The only thing I liked about Vista was it got me adicted to MacOS X.
