    PC starting randomly by itself!

    I did some work to my wife's PC a couple of days ago. I added some more RAM (from my old PC - same type), and added a video card (also from my old machine), and although it is working fine - much quicker than before, it is now re-starting randomly after shutdown.

    If I turn it off in the usual fashion (Win XP Home) it will restart again. It appears to be turning off correctly, but will usually restart within 30 secs or so, but it can also be several minutes later.

    I can't see anything amiss inside, and have checked the BIOS to ensure that all "wake-up" features remain disabled. (eg. Wake-up on LAN etc).

    One thing I have established is that if I wait for the PC to restart, and then quickly force it off with the power button, it seems to stay off. (This is during the pre-windows BIOS/Mem check phase)

    I would be surprised if the hardware I added from my old one would cause this problem, as my wife's PC uses the same motherboard, and both PC's were bought at the same time (5 years ago!) The only difference is that hers has a Celeron processor rather than a full Pentium 4.

    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    You probobly upset something when you were doing the hardware swap, ive seen this a few times, machines refusing to shutdown instead they just reboot, only way around it was to replace the MLB in those cases, might be easier just to give it the 5 second power off, thats what we ended up doing with some machines.

    power supply is the first thing i would be looking at.

    The thread description reminded me of ram causing this problem at our place. New ram and all was fixed. As you added ram, I'd suggest you take it back out and see if it still happens.

    my vista home basic it does it every now and them , i just say to myself it was designed by a yank, any thing is possiable so just let it have its fun then close it down again

    My pc does this occasionally especially after some of the windows upgrades want in...

    Thanks to everone who responded to this thread! I have solved the problem by changing the power supply (actually the one from my old machine).

    I am very grateful for all the suggestions, and must point out I have solved more computer problems by advice from this forum, than I have from other souces.
