the place was extrordinaly busy last night and has been wilting under the pressure for quite some time.

the next upgrade cycle is under way but it does take a lot of time and effort to get there.

Also,if we have had upgrades, and it was very busy with 200 people on,how did we get the record of 500 or so?
As Inc said, to upgrade and admin the site requires time and effort, I guess that we have to have paciense, it is a great site any way

    Cheers

    1) guests being there has little to do with it in reality. they look like they are still there from when they first attempt to view and they are then denied access but the session cookie stays there till it times out so it looks like there are heaps of them ....

    2) guests are kicked off long before subscribers are.

    3) the server is set to stop taking anyone when i/o becomes that lagged it could corrupt data.

    4) people don't like hearing it, but, it is not just the server, some peoples software configuration plays a big factor in how they are treated on web servers. if you are running avg, ie and have some other third party software like adaware or spybot running you will have more problems than someone running other configurations.

    5) the server is really busy in peak hours so if anything at all is playing with aulro.com session cookies then you can expect more problems than you would in non peak hours. is a fact of life.

    6) members doing searches are what bring the place to it's knees from what i have seen. the new posts function is a real killer on system i/o.

Googlebots will do that too. I assume you've not blocked them as AULRO often comes up on non-LR Google searches!

google doesn't need to do that as there is a program running in the background that does the days new indexes and submits them to google in the middle of the night.

    Fascinating stuff, Inc.

It annoys me that the search feature is limited to 90 seconds (now - was 60) but clearly it's important for the site.

I've got no idea of what the data structures are like but if I was at work I'd turn on statspack or equivalent and start tracing it through. I wonder how the indexing works as clearly the text fields are pretty large.

It makes me curious that some searches are fast and yet the cost of some are way too high which sounds as though there is something about the queries is causing it to dodge the indexes or use in inappropriate optimiser method for those queries. Like why should new posts be any higher cost than any other forum list view?

Anyway I know it's not my thing and I know you'd be on top of this stuff but it's an interesting muse...

I gather it's Mysql underneath which I have no knowledge of... I should really try and find out more about it....I might do some digging out of curiosity..
