    Problem reading dvd/cd disks

I have a problem with my PC reading burnt dvds/cds - even ones burnt on the PC. No problems reading genuine DVDs and music CDs. The troublesome disks work OK on other computers. I have replaced the reader with another and the problem persists - even tried it on a sata reader and again the problem persists - the one I normally use is an IDE dvd burner/reader.

So it would seem that the problem is in the computer itself. Any ideas? We use Nero to burn the disks.

    Thanks

Are you finalizing the disks that you burn?

Try that and see if that fixes your problem.

Also is it with a specific type of file you are trying to burn?

Thanks - all disks are finalised and work on other computers. Trying to read disks that have been created in the past and they have a mix of file types, word, Jpegs, Video, DVD.

Problem seems to be related to the computer as the problem persists even if the DVD burner/reader is changed.

    Thanks

maybe the disks themselves....quality, handling, storage, exposure, age, etc.

first thing to try is reinstall windows (as a repair install)...won't change your files or settings, just fix any operating files that have been modified by other programs.

Or rollback to a "Restore Point" at a date you know it was working.

Failing that, nuke it and start again with a fresh install.

What discs are you using, A lot of CD and DVD players will not read a CD-R, or DVD-R or DVD+R, Try CD-RW and / or DVD +/- RW discs.

    cheers

Thought that as well that is why I tried different DVD players in the computer - both IDE and SATA with the same result. However the disks work in Ok in other computers. The funny thing is that the computer will burn disks OK but will not read them when burnt but they read fine in other devices.

This is a long shot, but you could try deleting the UPPER and LOWER FILTERS.

Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

    Fairly easy to follow instructions.
I've done this a few times on various pc's in the past.

I forgot to mention that the above involves working in the registry, if you are hesitant in doing it yourself, see if you can get someone else that knows PC's to do it.
Or you can PM me and I'll assist via remote connection using Teamviewer Quick Support (it's free and safe to use)
If you read the instructions very carefully and only delete the lines listed, you should have no problems.
Another way to safeguard yourself is to backup the registry or just that particular key you are going to delete.
Then if something goes wrong, you can import the key or registry file.

I don't really know the specific answer to your problem but given that you think it is related to your computer set up and not a fault in the burner itself then it may be related to the set up of your ATA/ATAPI controllers.

Use google to research DVD burner issues related to 'ATA channel', ' PIO mode' and 'DMA mode' - for instance As a consequence, when I try to produce a DVD it goes through the process of producing the DVD but the computer won't recognize it to play.
