    central locking issue

I have lost the remote to unlock the doors on our 97 discovery, is there any way to retrofit an aftermarket central locking kit without replacing the door actuaters.

Why not just get another remote?
They're available on eBay or from Land Rover & as long as you get the correct frequency (315MHz), you'll be OK.

They are quoting around $240 for a new remote that needs to be recoded to the car.

I've fitted an aftermarket central locking system to mine. Best thing I've done to it for a while!! There is a little bit of stuffing around with wiring etc, and mounting the solenoids in the back doors is a wee bit tricky, but otherwise sweeeeeet. Highly recommend it.
It only took me 3/4 of a Saturday to do.
