P76 engine block is 20mm higher on each bank, and tends to overheat in a Land Rover. Engine mounts, engine accessory mounting points, flywheel, all different. Great on early Rangies where you can use the P76 carby, but not legal on a newer car as the engine is not emission rated. Fuel injection manifolds have been fitted using manifold spacers but tend to give plenty of manifold vacuum leaks. You are better off tweaking the 3.9 with a cam, better exhaust and above all a tune up to 10 degrees advance timing.
Go 4.6 if you can. Top hat high compression short engine. Throw in a high torque cam, a bit of flow work on the heads and some ignition tweaks and you'll get 250 - 260 bhp and more importantly over 300 ftlb, which is a big performance improvement over the stock 3.9.
For about 7.5k you can bring in a new 4 bolt 4.6 Turner Engineering crate long engine, 9.35:1 pistons with ductile iron flanged liners (the best), built up with gas flowed heads, cam, timing gears, rocker gear and all gaskets and seals needed to complete the build. And that includes shipping and import duties. Delivered to your door in about 10 days by UPS .

Have you checked out Triumph Rover spares they have heaps of stoker kits and pre built performance v8's for many purposes.
A nice 5ltr stroked 500bhp motor should get you off the line a little quicker.
