    help! Please?

    Hi all.
I've been a 4wder for a while now and have found a '92 turbo diesel discovery that I'm interested in.
It has a 3.5" OME lift, Front and rear ARB bars, ARB roof rack, snorkel, front and rear ARB lockers and dual batt system.
I was wondering if anyone could let me know what to look out for? The eng was rebuilt recently and although the inside has seen some use over the years, it's in good condition.
    The asking price is AU$8000.
The reason I need some more info is that I'm planning on trading in my '05 Jeep wrangler on the Rover as it's not a practical family 4wd(however much fun it's been), and it's a big decision for me as the Jeep was my first new car.
Any advice on the Rover would be appreciated. Criticisms of Jeep are expected.

    cheers.
    Clough.

    have you driven it?

stepping back from a jeep you are defiantly going to miss the speed off the mark amongst other things.

be a 200tdi i would think. some parts for the motor can be hard to get i am told. they are reliable if you keep them well cooled and regularly serviced.

drivetrain slop can be a problem.

rust in the rear floor and around the windows in the upper rear.

get it inspected by your closest decent independent land rover specialist, well worth the hundred or so bucks the inspection should cost...

    Thanks.
I realise that it wont be a speed demon, but that's one of the reasons I'm looking into it. I need a vehicle that I can carry the family(and all related camping gear) in and also have the ability to play on the harder trails. At face value this meets the criteria.
As you say, I need to get it checked out.
Were(are?) there major bugs in this model?
    Cheers.

Sort of nowhere ... or .... everywhere

    It's a 17 ? year's old car ...

So either it's in brilliant condition ... or on it's last legs

It was on it's last legs. Took it for a testdrive yesterday and the bonnet kept un-latching and threatening to fly up. The eng never stopped a heavy belching smoke(not just on acceleration), even though we drove it for half an hour. There was a 'lag' in the driveline somewhere while shifting and a heavy clunk when the clutch was engaged. I cant quite descibe the noise it made while cornering at more than a snails pace, but it was not one of those sounds that inspire confidence in a vehicle that I'm taking my Family in.
Oh well. I'm still looking for a larger 4WD.
    Thanks for the advice.

Yep sounds like a good one to stay away from, after an engine re-build it shouldn't be bellowing out smoke unless it has been fueled up a fair bit, was it black smoke?
