Does anyone recognise what weight springs I have in my Disco?

    Hi everyone,

My good old faithful V8 D1 which has a 2" suspension lift needs new springs front and back as they have sagged over the years and they sagged even worse when I recently went away and towed a camper trailer. Unfortunately I'm not sure what weight springs are in it right now so I don't know what to replace them with.

I also intend to replace the Bilstein shocks which have lost a lot of their dampening.

I climbed under the old girl earlier today and the rear springs (supposedly Kings) have eight coils and are black in colour with a orange stripe on them. The front springs have seven coils I have not found a colour on them yet but will clean them off later today.

The vehicle is quite modified so I'm guessing would need heavy springs then a standard lifted one, it has fitted to it a 120 litre tank a under body 40 Litre water tank, ARB rear bar.

    Front;
Dual batteries, ARB winch bar and winch.

Does anyone recognise what weight the rear springs are from the colours on them?

Also would eight coils tend to be what you would expect for a 2" lift? It also has a 2" body lift. It also has dislocation cones back and front and top and bottom.

The other question is I keep hearing some spring brands are better then others. Namely Dobinsons are better then Kings. Is this correct and from Aulro members experience what is the best for heavy off roading which the D1 basically only gets used for.

Any assistance would be appreciated so I can order some knew gear on Monday.

    cheers,
    Terry

black with an orange stripe sounds like a Land Rover spring..

You sure you got a lift

I would be sending discowhite a PM or hopefully he will come to the BBQ that way you can talk to him yourself...

He is very knowledgeable when it comes to shocks and springs and combinations..

Thanks Jarrod, I have actually spoke with Shane and he was most helpful but I was hoping to get some idea from my learned fellow members what springs are in it before I order a replacement set.

When I first brought the old girl I was amazed at how well it handled both fast on road driving and serious off road driving. If I knew what springs that were in it then I'd be more then happy to get new similar weight springs as replacements. If I don't find out then its a gamble if the ones that are recommended will be as good.

    cheers,
    Terry

(by the way no cheek from you Lou)

Well black with orange is probably an LRA spring which is 17.2 inches long and 180Lb per inch. I have them in my RRC and they give a 2 inch lift.
This seems quite low rate for a Disco as it more for a RRC with hydromat.

Thank you for that Phillip it is very informative, as I said I don't really care whose springs were used more to the point I'd just like to get it to again handle like it did when I first brought it before towing with it.

You are correct I'd say the springs in it are quite light but the old girl flexes like you wouldn't believe.

As this D1 was built up for the owner by Graeme Cooper Automotive who did all of the work some years ago I will ring Ward today and ask him what the go is as he oversaw the build.

Hopefully this will sort it all out so I can get some knew springs this week and get rid of the sag.

    cheers,
    Terry

If Graeme Cooper did the work then the springs WILL almost certainly be LRA.
Maybe you should consider having the Bilstiens rebuilt.

The way to test if yoursoprings are sagged is to measure them unloaded out of the car. If they are the original length they are OK.

The front springs will probably have a green stripe. Be careful if you replace them with LRA ,as originally they were 16.1 inches and exactly the same as a RRC rear spring, but now the LRA are 15.6 inches.

BTW IMHO the 15.6 which gives 1.5 inch lift are better because you retain some castor. That is what I have after taking out my OEM green stripes.

BTW again, do not believe that springs"wear out" unless they are shorter than spec to cause a drop. Springs never change their rate as this is dependent on the diameter of the wire, the length of the spring, and the metal used, all of which do not change.

Thanks Phillip you were right they are 180 Lb springs on the rear,

I've spoken with Ward and explained what is happening and he has recommended heavier rear springs 220's over the 180's that it has right now. He said they get their springs from a supplier in Melbourne.

I still have to get under the old girl and clean the front springs off to find out what they are. I should have new springs for the weekend and next week I'll take out the shocks and have them rebuilt.

    Thank you for your assistance.

    cheers,
    Terry

Well in the end the old springs weren't 180 lbs as seemed to be the case looking at the colours on them. I spoke with Ward at Coopers where my D1 was originally built up some years ago and he also thought that they were 180 pounders so he sent me two new 220 lb springs of the correct length for a 2" lift.

Anyway I had the new heavier springs put in on Friday and now it has dropped the rear quite a bit more, so now it looks like a dog with a busted arse.

So I'm going to send the old springs back to Coopers so they can work out exactly what they are. Anyway I found out why it had sagged so much, the old springs once out are bent like banana's in the middle. Even bent they are about 15 mm longer then the new ones. I'm guessing if they weren't bent they would be maybe upto 25 mm longer. So it would seem that it has more then a two inch lift.

It really didn't like towing the off road camper last Christmas it would seem, that is when the sagging started.

Never mind back to the drawing board.

    cheers,
    Terry
