third d1 wheel bearing in 18 months...oil filled hubs

    evening all,

about 18 months ago I replaced the drivers side front wheel bearing and seals due to leak ( i run oil filled hubs). I also replaced the swivel pin bearing housing at same time as it was pitted.

All was fine for a while, then hub started leaking again...next service a few months later, mechanic said bearing was stuffed, they replaced bearing and seal again.

Now, 12 months later I have failed roadworthy due to a stuffed bearing ( excessive play) I noticed it was leaking about 5 months ago...

Wondering, has anyone else had this problem...am I looking at replacing the entire swivel assembly?

thanks all, look forward to your thoughts..

excessive play could this possibly be due to the wheel bearing not being tightened enough perhaps?

    what bearings are you using?

    hi dullbird......thanks for the reply.

I will have to do some digging around to find which bearings were put in. I do recall specifically asking for the bearing that is recommended when doing oil filled hubs, but i can't find the serial numbers...

to oil or not to oil..

    hi Harry,

It does seem there are two camps on this one, the pro oil and the against... I am not sure to be honest. The passenger side hub has been fine and it is oil filled... I am not sure that is the problem....and I am not convinced it is the reason why this has happened on the drivers side again... I think tomorrow I will strip the hub down, reassemble and see if it was not tight enough.
If that doesn't work, i might put the inner seal in again, grease it instead and see what happens then

if theres any damage to the hub the bearing races may not seat, once youve done up the bearings you need to retighten them. failing that the stub shaft may be damaged which is letting the bearings fret round.

check for fretting and wear on the stub shaft, and where the bearings seat in the hub.doesn't take much
The new bearings appear fine when first fitted
but after about short time when checked again will have movement in them, just replaced spindles and bearings in a land cruiser for the same thing.

thanks guys, I found the problem yesterday. the lock washer had split down one side and the lock nut came loose, which made the hub adjusting nut come loose , which made the wheel wobble ....$3.85 later, problem solved.

if only everything was that easy
