    handbrake

    has anyone experianced the hand brake dragging only while in reverse?
    it seems to be haoppening in my 95 300tdi. release thye handbrake, back out of driveway, feels like a handbrake shudder, doesnt happen in forward gears.
    any idea's my hand brake isnt adjusted up to much, in fact it is due to be adjusted. wots going on

    Most likely either one shoe has seized in position, a spring is broken, or there is a lot of foreign material (most likely oil from a leaking seal) in the brake that happens to affect one shoe and not the other (or some combination of these). Note that small amounts of oil will cause the shoe to grab rather than slip.

    I would be inclined to remove the drum and see what is going on. On most Landrovers this can be done without removing the prop shaft, and I think this is the case for the D1.

    Nah, you've gotta remove the tailshaft...

    so remove the tail shaft to get to the drum handbrake?

    Have a look - it should be obvious whether you need to. I am not familiar with Discoveries, but most other Landrovers you can simply slide the drum back along the shaft after undoing the nuts holding it on (and of course releasing the brake and slacking off the adjuster). You can't completely remove the drum this way, but you should be able to work out what the problem is.

    Sorry mate, later LRs D1.D2. Defender etc.. require the tailshaft dropped.
    Its the same 4 bolts holding the drum on.
