I have a '95 d1 and it too has the transducer...
The D2 transfer case (all years) does not have the speedometer transducer on the rear output housing. On the D2 the "road speed" is calculated by the SLABS ECU. There is a recess in the rear housing where the transducer was mounted on earlier variants but the casting isn't drilled out.
Other significant differences if you are swapping transfer cases between models are the larger front output flange on the D2 and the hi/lo ratio switch on the upper front face of the D2 front output housing.
Additionally 03/04 models have two CDL switches on the front housing whereas earlier D2s (with the CDL internals) have one CDL switch as does the D1.
D2s without the CDL have only the hi/lo ratio switch on the front housing.
Typical L/R, lots of small differences that complicate the use of very similar parts between models.
