Turbo Lag?

I've recently purchased a low kms 300Tdi 130 Dual cab and are currently towing a Trak Shak with it around Australia. I'm experencing similar low end torque issues and the lack of pick up from standstill is at times embarrassing (we look like tourist so people just shake there heads):D.

I have a 300Tdi 110 back home in NZ and it has plenty more grunt low down (even towing bigger loads) so I'll be following some of the advice here to see if the 130 has issues. Both are stock standard. I'm a big fan of the 300Tdi and as standard it's a very good engine and plenty good enough for what we're using it for.

I would be dubious of fitting a VNT to a mechanically injected diesel.. This sort of thing really need electronic injection to get tuned well and get the best out of it. I would go for the other option. I think that the pump tweak and removing the muffler would be good places to start.

Why? The cost?

I can't see that there would be any harm in getting a turbo that can produce pressure at lower engine rpm. The IP has a boost compensator so will not inject extra fuel until it can detect that the turbo is producing boost.

Extra fuel down low will cause more heat and volume of gas at the exhaust so should spin the turbo up faster, with a VNT I can see that the boost will come on a bit earlier and perhaps you don't have to over fuel as much causing extra black smoke.

slug burner is correct, but a YNT is not cheep for an extra 3-400 rpm, but that may just be enough for many

The International HS2.8 TGV is a bored and stroked version of the 300Tdi, ie. mechanically injected and uses a VNT Garrett ;)

yes I am well aware of this motor and other people that use a VNT on a 200 or 300tdi. Mine is a personal preference and the reason is simple. It is a reactive system. I dont think that you would get the best out of it. This is not to be confused with good results. For best performance with a VNT I really think that you would need electronic injection... Just my 2c.

I think that you mis-read my post. I am not saying that it would not give good results.

If your getting good results from your 300tdi engine from putting a VNT on would that not be getting the best out of the engine?

I appreciate your saying that by fitting it to a mechanically injected desiel your not getting the best out of the VNT (or at least thats what I thought you were saying) however if I fitted a VNT to my engine I wouldn't be doing it to get the best out of the turbo I would be using the turbo to get the best out of the engine for the way it is set up.

a VNT for me would be something that fills in the gaps that my original turbo couldn't and get the best potential out of the engine....
