    Cool Turbo Lag?

I have a very nice 98 TDI but is suffers down low at different times with Turbo Lag. Or what I assume is called "Turbo Lag".
At low revs before the turbo kicks in and the motor feels like it is being powered by 2 Eveready AAA Batteries??
It is much worse before it heats up to operating temperature. But it can be pretty bad in a 4wd situation too when you need some bottom end torque.

    So, the question is..........
What can I do to improve this "Turbo Lag????????????????????"

I was wondering about two possibilities.
    1. Has anyone tried a special Cam grind to assist the TDI down low??

    2. Has anyone tried injecting Hydrogen into the intake manifold at lower revs to give the engine some oomph??

These are just off the cuff ideas I have thought about. The cam idea comes from my hoon days when a nicely ground Cam could make a LOT of difference to the performance of an engine. But I know little about it's effects on a Diesel?
The Hydrogen idea is something I have been tinkering with in my head and I think something that would be pretty easy to implement and only used when really needed by operating a manual switch rather than injecting it at all times under 2000rpm.
What are the proven methods at this stage???

I used to own a 3.5 lt Range Rover and really loved it and what I was able to do with it. It was the best 4wd up in the Territory where I lived at the time.
    But...........................

Times have changed. I can't afford 3 kms per litre. I love my Discovery and have few whinges about it.

Surely, there is a better answer than a V8!!??

Yea everything is in good nick.
Overall the performance is OK I just find myself in a few situations where I find the car needs some low down oomph.
    For example.
I was stuck in sand on a hot dry day up at Inskip Point during summer. I couldn't get the motor to the required revs in high range and got stuck.
Now, I believe I should have been able to cross this bit of beach in high range but the car lacked some bottom end oomph.
After stopping and putting it in low range it was too late as I was stuck.
Now, you may say that it was driver error, but I honestly believe that I should have been able to get over this bit of beach in high range. I have also done a LOT of real 4wd up in the Territory for many years.

I did a 3 point turn on a road with a steep decline into the gutters. When I went to reverse, I couldn't get the engine to rev high enough to get the turbo to "kick in" and thus got stuck.
I had to go into low range to reverse out. It was a bit steep, but not THAT steep and that was on tar!!!
Otherwise the motor performs really well once the Turbo kicks in, but it is a dog under 1500-2000 rpms

wow, you got 3kms per litre......sorry couldnt help myself

seriously tho, if you want power, then a Tdi isnt going to cut it. I know what you mean about having nothing down low, I had a ITD Rodeo once upon a time and even with a whopping 3 litres of intercooled turbo, it still wouldnt pull away comfortably on a hill...so i got rid of it and now will own nothing but a petrol and V8 is the weapon of choice these days.

This will no doubt upset the diesel pursists, but what the heck, its just my opinion

    good luck with your quest

No personal experiances but the upgraded intercooler kits are meant to give you a fair bit of extra go, this with an upgraded turbo, an ol tdi should get up and go alright...maybe
I'm having the same problam as you, the turbo lag on mine is pretty bad (200tdi) and fitting 33'' tyres didn't help at all
Will be interested in everyone's suggestions

P.s screwing the fuel and boost up abit should get abit more out of it to...

    CHEERS TIM.
