IMO removing mufflers is mostly a placebo on a Tdi as the original ones are straight through anyway.
Easy enough to up the off idle performance with a couple of judicious pump tweaks, as long as you don't mind a puff of smoke just off idle
Just follow the instructions here http://www.aulro.com/afvb/attachment...ng-20rev.2.pdf
It wouldn't surprise me at all that Land Rover would have done this. Defender = the real deal, Disco = almost as good, but a little bit softer in terms of noise and comfort.
Still couldnt get rid of the disco though.
So getting back to the gist of the thread, Have you fitted bigger tyres or made any other changes??? I found that my off boost has been affected by the tyres. I am hoping to rectify this with a T/Case change out (Defender LT230) and muffler removal, a boost and fuel tweak at the same time. Maybe intercooler change out as well. HBWC suggests the Subaru water to air cooler for better performance.
It's something we've all discussed over various forums over the years, and while upping the fuel by playing with either the boost compensator or fuel screw helps, and a bigger exhaust helps the turbo spool more quickly and definitely extends the usable rev range through the gears, at the end of the day the stock turbo is pretty inefficient.
The real fix is a VNT, or before VNT's and still a good option is MTQ's MHI TD04 turbo upgrade.
Both deliver the bottom end boost the engine needs and should have.
Mine's pretty quick now, I'm running 33" tyre's and carry around 500kg at all times and it's quicker than our TD42T Patrol empty but still doughy off the line.
or the real fix is just install a 4BD1T![]()
Just to answer a few questions asked.
I am running standard tyres and standard throughout except for a 1 or 2" suspension lift.
If an upgrade Turbo is the answer I'll look into it. It seems a upgrade intercooler is a go too.
Thanks
