    Hi Clinta;

    Welcome to the forum.

when I first purchased my disco I used to regularly get +700km out of an 80L tank running standard size tyres, your fuel economy will all depend on how much your car is loaded up and what size tyres you're running.there is no way I would get the same fuel economy out of mine with 35" inch rubber now

with standard size tyres i was getting about 10l/100km with daily driving around town.
on a long, highway trip would get around 9l/100km (thats with a boot load of gear for two for a week)

has blown a bit with the 32" rubber, upto about 11-12l/100km i think (haven't calculated exactly)

    power wise...well, what power?
once warmed up, they're torquey and you learn to drive for it. e.g. i rarely use 2nd around corners, just leave it in 3rd and use the low down torque.
but you won't be winning traffic light drags anytime soon!

thanks guys every one I speak to tells me to stay away from them because they are expensive for parts and they are hard to get. My pa has one a tdi and has only let him down once in 10 yrs so surely they cant be that bad. Any help would be great. I test drove a td5 and they werent too bad power wise is there much difference between the 2 thanks again...

11yr old Disco TDI with 280k on the clock still getting 10L/100km around town (850-900km out of tank. 89L tank + Filters & water seperator). Highway driving anywhere from 7.8-8.5l/100KMS. Towing pop top caravan 10.5-11.5L with A/Con on.
Would be great if they had a little more power/torque for towing in the tropics. looking at getting the DTS Turbo kit or a VNT Turbo plus better intercooler.

    Cheers

So stop speaking to people who don't know what they are talking about.

Seriously though, are any of the people who have told you that driving Land Rovers at the moment or are they just repeating myths they have heard?

If you do a bit of a search on this site and talk to people who actually own them, you will probably form the impression that like every other 4WD, they tend to be pretty reliable if they are properly maintained. Of course you can be unlucky, but that applies to any vehicle.

The father of a friend of mine had a Mercedes sedan that had a rear wheel bearing replaced 5 times under warranty before the dealer accepted that something was wrong with the car. That single incident doesn't make Mercedes an unreliable make any more than people repeating the myth about parts being expensive and hard to get makes Land Rovers dear to run.

Have you tried buying any parts for Land Cruisers lately?

If you do some research on this site, you will get a pretty good idea of some things to look out for.

I got a 97 tdi. Its was gutless wonder, now its passable but its great, I rarely speed anymore, its comfortable and gets me where I want to go.

There are ways to improve performance like bigger exhaust(less restrictions), intercooler upgrade, tweak fuel pump, VNT turbo and best of all D-Gas.
Its wicked, simple and makes a very noticeable difference.

If ever in SA, I give you a drive.

For what you pay, how can you go wrong, for under $10k, who cares. Go for it.
