    300TDI Purchase

    Hello everyone,

I have been lingering around anonymously for sometime gleaning advice and insight. Thank you to all the people that contribute to this forum. I have recently signed up as I am getting closer to purchasing a '94 300TDI.

The vehicle is at a dealer and has less than 170,000 km and a good service record. I asked a Land Rover specialist, who has been servicing the car for the last 8 years, to do an inspection on the car.

Apart from some cosmetic issues, such the roof line sagging and the alpine windows rusting, the following comments were made. I don't know enough about them so would really appreciate some feedback.

    "Expansion cooling level low

Vac pump, fuel pump, rear main, Sump leaks

    slow engine start, possible battery"

    and

"slight movement at wheel bearings, RH / LH F tie
    rod ends slight movement"

I understand that the vehicle may not have been driven a lot by the previous owner in the last year which is a plausible explanation for the low fluid levels and poor battery.

What is the opinion of people on this forum? Is it a safe buy? If I could get it for around $7K would it be a good buy?

    Thank you.

What you have listed is roughly $2k in repairs roughly, while you at it get the clutch done when rear main seal gets sorted, another $700ish.

The 94 model is that the old or new interior, can make a big difference in price.
What model is it SE or base S?
I feel its a little steep seeing that you will end up paying over $10-11K to get it registered, stamp duty, transfers and insurance etc.
    Thats just my opinion.
There is a 97-98 in the market section here with a ton of fruit(extras) for same money. Its a white one too which looks great.
    Just my thoughts of course.

Thanks. It has the newer interior. I am not sure if it is the S or SE. It has dual airbags, does that help?

Twin air bags does sound like a SE but still a bit pricey.

Do not rush into it, there are plenty out there.

So I took the plunge and purchased the vehicle, I picked it up yesterday. I am very happy with it, especially when I read closely in the service manual to find that it was a one owner vehicle.

    Thanks for your feedback.

    Now to find an adventure!

It is a 300tdi so is the new interior (300tdi are all updates). For a 94 update there are only two trim levels the standard level and the ES. S and SE designations came later.

ES had airbags, ABS and leather trim as standard - airbags and ABS were an option on the base model.

    Gotcha.

Why is a friends spare parts car a 94 complianced with 300tdi with ugly old interior. No leather no nothing.
Might have been a Rover thing that passed the production line somehow.

Ever heard of a 97 SE Plus model than. thats what I have and have found no other real info on them?

If it has a LT77 box then you are right. It would then be the interim model between the the first D1s and the updates. I thought that in a disco the ugly interior discos only had LT77 and TDI200s and the updates had 300s and R380 boxes.

Not sure what box it had/has.
I am sure that the poms pretty much did what they wanted at times and on change-over years we were at their mercy.
