    Remove at your peril

Pirtek or Enzed are your friends at making up some replacements, take the old ones off and they will need to braze some new fittings to attach new hoses.
BTW, you'll need new O rings too, the hose suppliers can't always supply so you may need to source some OE ones first.

Aren't those lines the gearbox cooler pipes on the D1 3.9 Auto ?

I suppose I should have just changed the comment to yes keep the lines connected. Unless you live in the Antartic.

On a Tdi the engine oil cooler is in the RH header tank of the radiator just like the ATF cooler, with the lines coming off the oil filter adapter.

The OE lines are notorious for leaking at the crimped connectors where the flexible lines are connected to the hard lines, so it depends on which engine we're talking about.

If you take the old engine cooler lines into B.A.T.S, they cane make up some new ones. they only cost about $20 each.

Regardless of if it's the engine oil cooler or the transmission fluid cooler both are very necessary if anything they are to small and bigger ones are needed especially if you are intending to do hard 4wding or heavy towing.

having said that with normal driving they are fine - but still required

yeah, i thought that might be the case, i was thinking of doing all the lines in flex hoses rather than the steel ( engine and auto ), and putting an oil cooler mounted in front of radiator, i have an auto cooler to add to front radiator soon too, will see how it goes. keep you posted

Good idea, and it'll take a bit of the load off the radiator too.
