    V8 Starter motor or not?

Has anyone had a similar problem?
I've owned the Discovery for two weeks now and besides the oil leak for which it's going to Rick's on Monday, it has been great. However over the last three days I've noticed that when I turn the ignition key it seems to hesitate a second or two before cranking and then starting. I thought maybe it was just my imagination and I wasn't turning the key far enough, it would fire up easily enough once the starter engaged.
Thursday night we go down to the airport to collect my parents, all load in, turn the key and nothing, at that point my heart almost stopped.
After a few flicks of the ignition it fire up. Since then it has been starting but with the slight delay after turning the key.
I have had the battery load tested and that is okay.
Cleaned the battery and the starter motor terminals.
I am now on the point of throwing a new starter at it.

Thing is we leave next week up to the Sunny Coast and the last thing I want to do is spoil everyone's holiday with a unreliable vehicle.

So any constructive suggestions would be appreciated.

sticky aux relay or starter solenoid.

easy cheap fix pull the item out and clean it + its contacts.

replace it if its the AUX relay that drives the starter solenoid and strip it down, clean it, give it a polish with some wet and dry, clean it again and reassmble if its the solenoid.

if its the starter motor proper, drop the brush plate off, clean up the brushes and the mounts and reassemble, if the bushes are shot head to an auto leccys and get replacements.

disconnect the small spade terminal from the starter solenoid, insulate it and then turn the key, the clicking relay is the one you are after. From memory, (and its on drugs ATM) its in the main fuse box i nthe engine bay.

Yes one is called Spot and the other Puddles.

I dropped off "Spot" at Rick's this morning with a list of things that need seeing to. I think it's safe to say this will blow the budget.

Have a look at the earth strap on the starter motor, make it a regular check when you do an oil change

    Tried that on Sat morning.
Rick said he would swop the starter relay but seemed sure it was the 'spider' behind the dash.
