Pull up the carpet in the front both sides and check out the floor as they can rust down there. Its fixable, but worth avoiding if possible. Also pull up the carpet in the luggage area and check for rust.
Is the radiator the original? They last well, but that's probably at the end of its life. Make the replacement brass not plastic.
If the gearbox seems OK it may respond to a service to tighten it up and new oil and keep going happily.
At that age the rubber fuel, coolant hoses etc and the belt are probably going and might need replacing.
Have the fuel injectors ever been serviced?

ive had a look at a couple of other unmolested examples.
250,000+ and over 7 grand. seems abit steep.
There is one in the paper with a new engine for 10 grand.
out of my budget ...unfortunatley.
I was also thinking i could keep the MTZ 31x10.5 - 15' and use them when i find a rover.
Thanks for the input, greatly appreciated.

Don't forget that the book price on the discos top out around $4k, insurance will cover you up to around $6K. So you can use that as a bargaining chip when they are asking stupid amounts.
I know the book price rarely reflects the true price on cars, but it's always nice to make the salesman squirm, but more importantly just be aware that if you spend $10k on a disco, it won't be insured for that amount if you go with market value. But you shouldn't really be paying anything more than $6k, if you do it would need to be a really good one that has full history and has been very well looked after...

Hi,
Ive have previously looked at the reb book listings and couldnt work out where people were getting "their" price from. especially when they are stock standard, no accessories and no major service reports. new heads or anything. (private sales not car yards).
Well i've spyed another one. 1996 Tdi auto 209,000 on the clock.
The owners are selling it through their mechanic on ebay, unregistered with a blue slip.
has has a new head and timing belt done. brakes all round, machined rotors, new pads and the old fluid pumped out.
no rust, although they did have some in tha alpine windows that was , "professionally repaired". and the hoses are ok but should be replaced.
looks ok and the current price is reasonable. only problem is i can go and see it as its a 4.5 hour drive one way.
one question: he said the head was replaced with a non-genuine one as they are better. said something about it being from mexico? (any comments on that)
Cheers
Tim
