Thread: Centre Diff Front Coupling Question

Front Output shaft play with the LT230 isn't a worry, within reason. The front bearing is a single row ball type bearing, and will have an amount of radial clearance, which will translate into up and down motion at the flange which is some 60mm away.

If it isn't leaking, and the shaft rotates smoothly etc then it should be OK. It is difficult to give any more advice without feeling it for myself.

Also, vibrations on coasting can be an indication that the front output bearing is failing.

If the front bearing IS failing, is it a big job to replace??
ie Can it be done without having to pull the transfer case out??

The seal is leaking, and I want to replace it over the next few weeks.
I wouldn't say I have a BAD vibration on coasting however I do have a new noise that wasn't there until a recent trip where we did some real hard off road work, about 1000 k's of rough dirt.

It isn't a loud noise really, but I have noticed it.

Absolute piece of cake to replace in situ. Apply the CDL first, Remove the flange, and the seal. Remove the circlip, and simply attach a slide hammer to shaft and pull (Hammer) it out. Press new brg onto shaft (Make sure you fit the spacer the right way round under bearing!!!) and tap back into place in housing. Use a thin pin punch on the outer race only to do this. You may have to rotate it a little to engage the CDL Dogs during installation. It isn't very tight so shouldn't need a pounding. Refit seal and flange and BYU.

A trick to fitting the seal square - Tap the seal gently in to start it, and then use the flanges' mudshield to drive it in all the way by tightening the nut. Remove the flange again and very slightly tap the seal evenly further in to clear the flange mudshield.
