Diesel or petrol?
hey all,
in the past two weeks, my TDI has had a few dramas with my idle levels and i'd like to hunt down where this issue is coming from so i can (ideally) fix it myself. Being fresh to engine issues with these bad boys (always played with little petrols in the past), looking for some humble guidance.
after making a trip from rocky out to moura QLD, 160 odd ks, i pulled up at work and the idle kicked far below the usual 700ish. Turned her off and found the problem wasnt there after a few hours.
over the last 2 weeks though, its returned now to be full time. I find when it is cold, or air con is engaged, the idle doesn't hold at the usual level, rather dropping down to about 600 then up to 700 and back and forth. to date i've just been barely touching the pedel to keep her stable at the 700 mark which works quite fine. again, when she's up to temperature and no aircon, seems to sit there no real issues.
ive been nursing her until yesterday to finally get some time to start investigating where this problem to lie, with about all i can find in searching under idle issues is injectors U/S.
beyond services, identifying i need a fresh set of engine & tranny mounts and replacing the vac pump about 8 months ago, i haven't had much need to get the head under the bonnet. not sure if that's useful to the problem, but thought it may offer something just in case.
would appreciate a start point for where to look, what to test etc as i've got the RAVE manual, but can't seem to find much troubleshooting guidance through it, so hopefully i can get it here.

Not sure if your model has an idle control solenoid, but my '95 tdi doesn't. When the A/C pump cycles on, the revs drop to around 600, then back up to 700 ish when it cycles off.
Check your accelerator cable has adequate free play and adjust your idle speed adjustment to around 700-750 with the a/c off.
Will do bud, thanks for the starter.. Anymore suggestions others can offer to this little troubleshooting exercise?
Guys, I've checked idle and she sits clean on 750 when the AC is off..
Can this be something internal? Injector on the fritz, blow by on the cylinders?
check for delamination in your intercooler hoses
Ade, just so I can understand, what affect would this be happening?
