The HEC 716 and MEC 717 have slighly different resistances but both match up to the BIM024 module. The terminals are also different (HEC 716 has a male or din/spark plug style terminal and MEC 717 a standard female/coil canister style terminal). Anyone have any idea on which would be the better coil for a RV8 using existing wiring and BIM024 ????
PS Just saw the HEC715 idential to HEC716 except HEC715 has female terminals like the MEC717
MEC 717 is the go.

The HEC 715 has same terminal style as MEC 717 if keeping existing HT coil/dizzy lead was a concern (both match up to the BIM 024). I thought HE= "High Energy" and ME = "Medium Energy"??? Question is which is better for a RV8 and using existing low voltage wiring??
HE and ME refers usually to the output terminal type. HE is mostly male (except for the 715) and ME is female and takes a standard coil lead. Both types will run off the BIM 024 amp and will jump a spark across a 1 inch air gap from the coil. So I consider them equal.Quote:

There used to be different modules/amps for these coils but they have all been superseded by the 024. Given that some of the Holden HEI systems ran 1.5mm (60 thou!) plug gap and the MEC coils ran 1.1mm there might be a difference originally but at 0.8mm you won't need a HEC coil on a LR even though it fits and works just fine.
Using a male coil means you just find a plug lead of the correct length to replace the coil lead.
Well, it started.... thats the good news. The other news is that when I went to finalise all the wiring, clean it up, mastic etc, I opened the distributor and the metal tongue off the rotor button fell onto the ground.... this is a new rotor button mind... so no have to source a new one, and I won't be going back to the previous source (s...rcrap autos for those who are listening). Where can I get a rotor and cap (now that the cap has had the button flying around inside it, it is not to be trusted either) from and make sure I am getting quality parts....

bigmac2X2 apologies for hijacking you thread a bit, but adding a transformer style coil to your or anyone elses BIM 024 changeover gives some more coil options.
Attached are details of these coils.
There is bosch rotor and cap combo that fits and works well (search for #) however genuine Lucas is the go but sometimes very expense depending where you are. Beware there is a rubbish chinese reproduction complete with lucas printed packaging out there.
Thanks for the pdf on coils, I hadn't seen that before. The XF Falcon rotor GB864 seems to be a good fit but I would suggest double checking on the old cap just in case. I tried one where the cap rode up slightly on the centre button and I just fitted an early cap I had in the shelf instead. (GL665)Quote:
