    Smile Rear Main Seal 300TDI

    Hope someone can help.

If you have a Rear Main Seal that is leaking, would it leak on the inside or the outside of the Gearbox housing? I have the R380 box. at the moment I have a small leak but cant tell if it is the sump of the main seal. I have taken out the wading plug from the bellhousing expecting a lot of oil but i got nothing. Is this a good sign?

On another matter, Gearbox Oil! Landrover recommend MTF94. Does anybody know what colour it is? I have replaced the current oil with Penrite Transaxle 75. The old oil was red(As in like Dextron II). I have a suspision that the Landrover Dealer (If you can call them that) up here in Darwin has put in Dextron II instead of MTF94. (PS: Dec'98 300TDI Disco).

    Thanks for the help.

I would have thought that a leak from the rear main seal could escape via the bellhousing-to-block interface or via the wading plug in the bellhousing. I also have a slow leak around that area but I think its the sump gasket; although, it could be the rubber "T" seals on the rear bearing block which are known to degenerate.

And I think LR use to recommend Dextron II for the gearbox until they changed it to MTF94 (copied from landyzone.uk):

    TECHNICAL BULLETIN
    MODEL/DERIVATIVE: Bulletin N o : 0007
    Range Rover
    Discovery / New Discovery
    CDS. ref: L8462bu
    Issue: 2

    AFFECTED RANGE:
All R380 manual gearbox derivatives - refer to text for specific change points
    All Freelander
    RE - ISSUE INFORMATION:
Incorrect specification reference deleted from PARTS INFORMATION.
Please destroy your existing copy and replace with this Issue 2.
    PROBLEM:
GEARBOX OIL - CHANGE TO SPECIFICATION

    CAUSE:
At the following VINs, the original oil fill specification for the R380 gearbox was
changed to Texaco MTF94 high performance oil:
    Range Rover - WA 384300
    Discovery - WA 752315
    Defender - WA 131138
    New Discovery - All vehicles
The Freelander PG1 gearbox has used the new oil since introduction of the model.
    ACTION:
MTF94 will be recognised by its orange/honey colour as opposed to the red
Dexron II oil previously used, and is now available from Land Rover Parts.
It is now the only oil which should be used for topping up and complete fill on
    R380/PG1 gearbox applications.
The new oil is compatible with the old and to enable earlier vehicles to benefit from
its introduction, should be used retrospectively on vehicles prior to the above VINs
for all top up and refill requirements.
Refer to PARTS INFORMATIONoverleaf for details.
Until further notice, current Service Schedule gearbox oil change periods are
retained and must be adhered to.

Clutch fluid is fine, correct level and no leaks. Although I think the thrust bearing is on the way out. changed the clutch kit when the clutch fork wore thru at the pivot ball inside the bellhousing 6 years ago. Probably done about 110-130k on it since then. Still shift ok but the bearing noise is starting to increase so I know it's on it's way out. It seems to be a lot less noisy below 2000rpm and/or no load(Acceleration). Will try it today with the transfer in neutral and see what noise it makes.

Just pulled out the reciept for the last Service and guess what.
    Valvoline- 15W40 Problend - engine
ATF DEX 3 - Assume Power Steer
Gear 75W85 -Assume Gearbox & transfer Case
    LS90 - Assume diffs & Transfer
Just checked and the Valvoline is a replacment for the MTF94, I assume that it is red in clolour so ok. Couldn't find anything on valoline website.

Luke, the valvoline 75W/85 Duragear synthetic blend is a light honey colour with a sulphurish smell. I have used this and it works well with the R380 shift problems.
Quite different to the redish ATF which is not sulphurish to smell.
