    Help - D1 (300TDI) blowing white smoke

Ok boys been doing a lot of reading and it seems to be the general consensus is that you are supposed to look after vehicles. I just bought my folks 1998 Landrover Discovery and its been lacking a service for the last 50,000 or more and its never had the injectors touched. It had recently died according to my old man blowing white smoke. There was no signs of mixing Ie water in oil or vica versa. I'm starting to think that its the injectors might be a little sad i know there starting to leak around the top of the block and was looking at servicing them but reading more thinkin just replacement would be good. How much are they worth generally? When i got it to home i started it up to see the smoke but there was none really nothing was missing and the motor was rocking pretty hard got the motor upto temp and now its been pretty good ever since only a couple of times on a could start its missed but only for 5 or 6 turns of the motor and then its good. What i want to know is there anything else that i should be checking on this old girl. Keeping in mind its got nearly 400,000km/s on the clock.

Cheers if you aren't sure i'm happy to explain a little more.

    Thanks for the patients

What engine are we talking about?

Dec 1998 could be 300tdi, extremely early Td5 or V8 petrol.

White smoke could be steam or it could be brake fluid. I doubt it'll be injectors either way.

I see this is your first post. To make it easier for people and maximise the amount of good advice I suggest you do the following. First relist as a new thread and with a new title say

Help - D1 (insert engine type) blowing white stuff

Then provide as much info as you can and if your not sure about the cause or cure then speculating just adds to the confusion.

Good luck hunting down the problem

To answer a little bit, injectors from the uk are about 40 pound new, depending on where you go. 400,000km is starting to get up there with these motors. But "they" think (Land Rover Owners International) that they should do 250,000 to 300,000 miles

ok sorry a little more accurate information would be good 300Tdi is the motor. Took it for a run out to north cairns this evening and the thing has done a bobo. Started to coff after about 50kms driving through town. On the return trip from parent it start to miss and blow a fair amount more black smoke sounded like it was missing on 1 cyclinder. go about another 20kms to home and it got real hot mind you it was on a rather steep hill. Let it cool and put coolant in it and allowed to sit then started it and its gone back to being real rough running and started to blow a bit of white smoke looked to be like lack of air supply. Theres no change in the oil levels so thinking that theres nothing wrong with the head but i'm no way the expert.

on side note quoted some parts from local supplier for some TLC.

    Injectors $248 each
    Air Filter $21.55
    Oil Filter $15.85

White smoke and poor starting is usually timing, when did it get a timing belt last???

The head gasket is usually suspect at around 250K interval, but the initial symptoms you spoke about sound more fuel pump timing/ compression related to me.

Injectors if looked after etc will see 300,000+km. They are non servicable.

    Hi guys
just talking to a friend of mine who came down last night and its seems to be that the timing has slipped on the motor. In need of a manual to reset timing and pull a few other things down does anyone know of somewhere i can obtain manuals for theese vehicles and motor?

A worn/ loose timing belt is usually the suspect here, OR the front pulley is loose and the key has flogged out. I hope this is not the case.

I second Scouses comment, get a RAVE disc and take a look.

My brother-in-law a few years ago had a Ford Escort Twin Cam (the one with the Lotus motor)
He had a problem with it. When he backed off the go peddle there would be a heap of white smoke coming out the exhaust and when he put his foot on the gas again the engine would ping badly.
So he thought, the cam chain has slipped, cams are out, possible bent valve.
He gave the car to a well respected engine builder/tuner expecting big bucks fix job.
He phoned later that day expecting to here bad news, but was told the cars was fixed, no problems, just replaced the brake power booster.

The problem was the brake master cylinder was leaking brake fuid into the power booster, and when under high vacumm barke fuid was sucked into the engine (that was the white smoke) and when he put his foot on the go peddle, the engine tried to burn the brake fuid (that was the ping noise).
