Look if the noise changes under load , I would be looking at a very simple thing, ie the exhaust manifold gaskets or the gasket joining teh exhaust manifold to the down pipe.
.
if it is that noisy, you should be able to feel the leak witrh your hand(carefully).
You would not be the first or last to pull and engine apart for a leaking exhaust gasket. They sound incredibly like tappets.

thanx na it sounds like the middle of the motor at the front it rattles when idle then u rev it up a bit goes away till u drop the revs back my mate thinks it could be oil pump but havent checked am doing change first then go from there sounds top end it goes hard still and doesnt miss a beat just after a few days not going it seams to feul up and gets hard to start i have just bought it and for 2000 i thought it was a bargain even if i have to spend a bit on it

UPDATE changed the oil put magnatec in it and it runs beautifully the noise seams to have gone had to put bought a genuine filter and a ford afl 1 well the genuine one had a stripped centre already so i fitted the ford one bit longer but works clears everything .lets hope this was the problem

nope didnt go so i put nulon lifter free in it and drover it on a trip now all gone so am relieved lol
