maybe not relevant but i did something similar years ago with another model of a leyland but this car had no tappets so it had wondering for about 6 months then all a sudden the noise stopped and it started to run on 1 less cylinder.
pulled down the engine and found the side of a piston was in the sump

the noise i had was all over the place, sometimes there, sometimes not, very perplexing. when it went i was several hundred kilometres from home (Clifton on the darling downs) so limped home at 80 kays and 3 cylinders.
on the trip home i pulled into the Aratula servo and filled the oil up and checked the petrol i kid you not

Just guesses from what you say but

sticking exhaust valve, or maybe bent valve .

Do a compression test and it may tell you where to look.

Do the rover v8's have manually adjusted tappets? Rebuilt stacey's pajero and it had a tappet rattle when i started it back up, they are auto adjusting tapets and ahave a pocket of oil between the tappet and the lifter. In this case there wasnt any oil so it rattled its arse off. Pulled it off, put some oil in and away she want.

It has hydraulic tappets, maybe one has collapsed, also possible it had stripped a rocker shaft retaining bolt.

Find TDC in cylinder number one and check if its loose, the find the fireing order and work your way through all 8. One of them will have play in it, then you can look to find out what is causing the play.
