DREADED LINER FAILURE REPAIR

Soooo, one would assume[knowing what assume does!]that a slipped liner wouldn't cause engine miss under load then that could be maybe ruled out? As I said there was an instantaneous 'clunk' that I thought was a flat tyre the moment the missing started, though the engine had been a bit rattly on the drivers side bank for a while.

The mechanic took the valve covers off, and said the rockers were worn but still servicable. $900 to R & R with new ones.

He is removing the heads today if the comp test shows an anomaly and if there is any sort of liner issue, or a holed/cracked piston:othat will be obvious even to me and my crap eyesight! I'll enter here what the final diagnosis is.
Off to work to make some money for the money pit, I mean Disco:p

I was told once on a forum that the liners can slip so much that they slide down and contact the balance mass on the crankshaft. This will eventually lead to the engine disintegrating; however; the respondent suggested I look for shiny bits on the bottom of the liners,

shiny bits on the bottom of the liners is for 4ltr and above, 3.9 shiny on top like bee utey said.

the other thing you can do is try to ID what cylinder it is. easy by pulling the lead and the knocking will change. then stop the motor with that piston at BDC.

Easy to see once you have pulled the head

Well, a little update.
The mechanic called me today, he did the compression test like he said he would before he pulled the cam and lifters and all cylinders had 150psi and were all within 2psi of each other, so that would rule out a liner issue? I guess it also rules out head gasket, holed pistons, bent valves etc. He said the noise that is still apparent might be a lifter no filling with oil correctly and should come good with use.
He replaced the dizzy cap with another genuine Lucas one[it had a new Lucas one fitted by him in 2010]and he reckons it's better as far as the 'misfire' goes.
I'm picking up my Disco tomorrow morning, the owner won't be there but he says to drive it a few days and see what I think before any money changes hands, as the fault isn't fixed.
Can't be any fairer than that.:cool:

What would that do? I doubt it though being Land Rover specialists......still I'll ask the question when i talk to them next week.

G'day All,
Picked up my Disco this morning and drove it the 13km to work. Engine does feel better than last time I drove it, and once underway I thought it felt OK. There is still a rattle at idle, that seems to come and go-perhaps it is a lifter not filling with oil properly[air lock?] At least the gear stick doesn't shake at 100km/h like it did previously!

I'm doing at 600 odd km drive over the weekend so I'll see how it goes and talk to the mechanic next week. They have been very helpful thus far.

Mine had a rattle at idle that sounded just like a lifter but when we shorted the spark plug the noise went away indicating that it was a big-end bearing failure.

It would be worth getting this checked to at least eliminate it,

A pinned liner is where a dowel is used to pin the liner and prevent it from moving. The other technique is to top hat the liner so that it cannot slip down the bore.

It is a V8 thing:wasntme:

Holden lifters are orften used as a cheaper alternative to genuine LR parts.

Some like using them, some don't though.
