i believe so, and if you do remove the switches to clean etc i'd appreciate if you could tell me how to do this because i couldn't figure out how to get into them!
I replaced my relay which i think was part of the issue because the air con now works again but is still fiddly so may not come on when i first switch on. It comes on if i switch it on and off a few times....
very strange, anyway, would appreciate if you could let me know how you go getting into the switches to clean!! cheers!

Hey guys,
Mine has the issue where it will quit when fan is on full. Having said that, I'm too cheap to use it as fuel Econ is ****house anyway :)
The picture below removes the facia but doesn't allow removal of the ac button. I've been trying to remove mine for 12 months as the bulb has gone and is annoying me that I can't see it in the dark.
Any advice greatly appreciated. Every time I try, I'm scared it'll break!

Odd, the diagram you posted isn't what i have at all but anyway, it spurred me onto to give it another try and this time i managed it. Although now i'm stuck again!
I think i've found the problem but i don't know how to fix it or even if i can...have a look at the photo below, the silver thing on the right controls the fan speed, i found that if i tapped that silver part (circled) with a screwdriver it makes it work! So there's something dodgy with that part i think ... any idea what i need to replace and where to buy?
Thanks very much all for your continued help!!

Also ... i took a photo of this but don't think it has anything to do with the air con photo, just found it odd that it wasn't connected to anything. Does anyone know what it's for and what it should be connected to?

You can't just undo those two philip screws (at the top of your red circle) and pull out the switch can you?

i couldn't but am going to go to the hardware store today to see if i can some sort of tricky screwdriver to get in to them. There's very little clearance above them....
Will give that a try and then clean up the contacts with an emery board or similiar.
cheers

Awesome. Let me know how you go. Mine is going well now except on the fourth fan setting, so will get around to doing the same thing eventually. I also need to replace the little globe as I can't see the controls at night.

There have been a number of posts on this before, I may have even started one . Anywho, I had the exact same symptoms as you mosman-disco on my D1 update v8 and found that the earth connection of the fan was dodgy.
The earth connection for the AC fan is located behind the passenger side foot well kickpanel and is a multiplug with 8 black wires going into one side and a common termination going into the body on the other side (on the D1 v8 update at least). The connection pin for the AC fan had gone black (due to arcing), and required cleaning and re-seating. After this it worked fine. Of course I only found the this after completely removing half the dash, disassembling the aircon controls and testing the resistor pack to find it was perfectly operational . Ended up tracking it down with the multimeter but if I had have looked at the plug I would have known instantly as the plastic was black and brown around the pin. Worth a look before you start pulling everything apart.
edit* Wongdai, definitely sounds as if your is the resistor pack if its working on the high setting but not the lowest. High setting is a direct connection while the remaining three are through resistors.
Also looking back at the pictures they look like the first D1's. No idea if these are the same as D1 updates. So my help may be of no use at all :(

Hi all - thought this update may help some of you! I've finally got beautifully functioning air con :)
After removing the dash panels to find that the tapping of the air con switches turned it on and off i was pretty certain that was the issue, i took advice and cleaned those as best i could but still played up (did work better but was by no means reliable).
Finally decided to try and find replacement switches, an email to British Off Road earlier this week got a reply immediately, $85 each switch for brand new ones or $35 for reconditioned ones. They did a deal for two brand new ones for $150, were delivered the following day, installed the following night and working perfectly. Glenn at British Off Road was really helpful and the turnaround/delivery time speaks for itself! SO my advice, if you think it's the switches, save yourself the time and hassle and just get some new ones :)
ps. thanks Stuee, if it starts playing up again i'll know where to look now!
