The weird thing is it still only does come on at night. Even without any of the electrics/lights or aircon on. But during the day, not a hint of red light from batt indicator.

Then start looking at all the connections on the +side as you have eliminated teh -. It probably on during the day but you cannot see it.
Its a bit hard to diagnose on the engine noise.

Could be pinging, in which case check the timing which should be no more than 9 degrees BTDC static . If it is more the bring it back, and if already less than 9 degrees something else is happening.
Could be a sticking exhaust valve which only sticks under high load.
    Could be leaking exhaust manifold.
Could be aircon related . At low speed if the fans are not working, the head pressure could be high which can cause the compressor to make a noise. Check the 2 fans in front of the radiator are on all the time the aircon is on.
I have run out of could bes for the moment, so check those things.
    Regards Philip A

    This is an overdue update.
I managed to find out one of the HT leads (no5 in particular) is faulty. The connecting plug is broken at the distributor. So will be replacing this shortly and hopefully the pinging issue will sort itself out.
Also managed to give the throttle butterfly a good cleaning and im surprised what a difference it makes.

Unfortunately i have another problem on my hands now.
I went offroading for the first time with my disco.....took it through some serious mudding and was very pleased what a capable vehicle the disco is, especially with bald HT tires!

The problem is that i pressure hosed my engine bay.....now the old girl doesnt want to fire up. She cranks up just fine but she just does not want to fire up.
I made sure i WD40 the distributor and wrapped plastic around it first before washing and kept the pressure hose a good distance away from all the sensitive electricals.

I thought the distributor might be soaked so i took the dist cap off and gave it a good drying with a air gun. I also removed the AFM and gave that a good air spraying as well.
Neither the Dist nor the AFM was wet in the first place but i still gave it a good cleaning but still doesnt wanna fire up.

    Any suggestions guys?
Because it took it to the car wash its been parked there for two days now gonna try again later but im running out of ideas why she doesnt fire.

Btw regarding my first offroading trip.....it was absolutely awesome! Im totally hooked. Just ordered a set of Kumho MT KL71 245/75-16....fitting them tomorrow but hopefully i can get the old girl to fire up and drive to the tyre shop LOL

ok guys now i really need your help.

    i cleaned all spark plugs
checked main HT lead from ignition coil to distributor for spark - YES has spark
checked individual leads (female end) to sparkplugs for spark - YES has spark
double checked distributor if its dry and sprayed wd40 - YES double dry
checked AFM and applied wd40 at connector.

Battery still has lots of juice left.....but i had a friend to piggy back his batt just incase.....still wouldnt fire up.

Since all of the above is good....i can only speculate that there may not be any fuel going in the cylinders.

Does anyone know how do i confirm this or check if fuel system is ok?

Or any other suggestions is gladly welcomed.

    Im getting really demoralized.

Have you checked the coil and dizzy module plugs (normally on radiator support behind headlight in engine bay) big mistake is using wd40 try using contact cleaner on the wire connectors instead (ask me how I know). Even try leaving the dizzy cap off for a while to let any condensation out. Can you hear the fuel pump pressurize when you turn the ignition on?? Checked the fuses??

Seems more difficult to login to the forum these days.

Thanks Nicho for the tips. She still wont fire up today.

I checked all the fuses, all seems fine.
Fuel pump does pressurize when ignition is on.
"Have you checked the coil and dizzy module plugs (normally on radiator support behind headlight in engine bay) " - apologies, im not exactly sure what to look for here. However i checked and made sure all the plugs are dried on the ignition coil and distributor.

I've left the distributor cap off as per advised.....hopefully any excess moisture will evaporate over night.

Initially i was reluctant to apply wd40 but since i have made a few calls for assistance, everyone have told me to apply or its ok to use wd40.
Have you had any bad experience with wd40 on electrics?

Yes. It is only useful in a severe emergency, like there's a chance of iminent drowning. Otherwise polishing a cap with a clean dry rag is far superior as dirt will stick to the WD40-wet surface, dry and make the problem worse. Also freshly applied WD40 inside a distributor can explode in the cap. To dry out a dissy you need heat, a cold damp night may not do it. I use an old hair dryer.

    the disco is finally alive!
changed the sparkplugs for new bosch WR 7 D and a little jump start help from a donor vehicle and she's good to go

unfortunately now i have another problem. there seems to be oil seeping into the cylinders cos the old sparkies were covered with oil and petrol.

the old girl has only done 143,000km .....is it common for the rings to go at this mileage?

Mines done 270,000km and still going strong. Sugest that the oil and fuel on the old sparkplugs are from being flooded while trying to start the motor. Bob
