    Should I sell?

Well, I am sure many of you have read all about the issue sI have had with my Landy. D1 V8 1996.

I was very much taken for a fool, and fell for it. I was ripped off and paid probably twice what it was really worth becasue the seller hid the engine problems from me. Any way, not the point.

A fella I work with has taken a liking to it. I have told him about the problems, outlined what is wrong with the engine, hidden nothing from him. The fool has offered me $4000 for it, in it's current state. This means I am loosing a lot of cash, but it is costing me over $10 per day in fuel just to drive to work and back. And that is a short 25 minute drive!! Plus, I still have a bad taste in my mouth about the way I came to get this car. Every time I get in I remember how I was conned by the b* who sold it to me. So I am thinking.... Should I sell it?

Would save me a bunch in running costs, insurance, rapair bills etc. And also would allow me to draw a line under the whole ugly episode.

Is $4K a good price? I think so, but then I thought I was paying a good price when I baught it, so that shows how little I know!

its a tough question for any of us to answer..

I think 4k for a 96 v8 with loads of problems is probably worth it.. its such a shame you ended up with all these problems.. I'm assuming you've give up on repairing them..

If you've been to see a Rover specialist and they've told you that it's cactus then sell it and move on is my opinion. I was worried about my Disco 1 V8 for a while there though and I finally took it for a professional verdict and they ended up telling me that it only needed a couple of little parts replaced but otherwise it was a great car...so if you haven't done that already you might want to before biting the bullet.

If you have though I am sorry you got those problems, that really sucks and I hope the guy who sold it to you gets plenty of bad karma in the form of funny spots all over his pee pee!

Ahh bugger - not a good situation to be in, and for what it's worth all of us get conned occasionally. I did with mine but I have kept at it and now it is pretty good; but I have spent way to much money on it. Now the only way to get some of it back is to live to about 1000 and have no other problems to break even.

If I added up what I have spent on it i could have probably bought a good disco III - so If you dont have the money to do that then it is probably a good idea to drop it and look for a better one. Most importantly dont let this damped your view of landies

If he is aware of the issues/problems with the car, and you are "happy" with $4000, then I'd say sell it and try again on another Disco, maybe a Diesel next time.

I was offered $4000 for my '97 Diesel Disco1 as a trade in, and mine was all working OK. Didn't take it as I reckon it's worth more than that to me around the farm.

Hope you have more luck with the next vehicle.

I would say sell it and buy a 300Tdi Disco or defender. No electrics, no vacuum advance, half the number of cylinders etc etc... mean diagnosis and repair is much easier if things go wrong .

I just bought a '96 300Tdi disco for a fair bit less than 4k in good condition (though I did already own the gearbox in it).

I have just reviewed several your posts and I have to say that I do not think there is a lot wrong with the car.

You look to be dropping thousands from what you say if you sell it yet you seem to baulk at spending a few hundred on a specialist to get it right.

Some of the symptoms suggest poor connections, as you mention in one post AFAIR that the connector was loose on the temp sender. What did you do about it? Did you give the spades a slight twist so that they would be tighter? Did you twist the blades in the MAF a little?

Before you sell it, have a specialist look at it.

I guess that you are also disappointed that it uses lots of petrol, but work out how many ks you will do say in the next 5 years and what the difference is fuel cost is. Unless you do over 20KK then it is not worth it IMHO compared with the changover cost and taxes.

Funny, I have never had these problems, although it always ran rich with the old injectors, and a new set from USA made a big difference. I look upon injectors and some sensors (TPS) as wear items and replaced all but the MAF when I overhaul the heads etc. I replaced the fuel pressure regulator this time and the TPS, temp, IAC, and injectors about 90KK ago. I also replaced the dizzy cap and rotor then.

I have since bought another set of recod Bosch gen111(yellow) injectors , but seeing mine still gave a good pattern , I have them as spares.
Another thing you have not done AFAIK is to methodically do a complete injection check as per the manual. There are 20 or so tests that can be done (with a multimeter) and these are more akin to computers than cars.

I do not know the full history but from what PhillipA is saying I tend to agree with him. If you have not had a proper diagnosis from a proper specialist then I wouldn't be selling until you can do that...even if it means dropping $500 or a little more into it. When I first got my V8 on LPG I was worried about it because I'd heard all sorts of nasty reputation stories about Landys from people...probably people who didn't own them or never maintained them properly. So I was worried for ages and whinged a fair bit on the forum but got some great advice from everyone and fixed a bunch of stuff myself. All in all it had done 200,000kms and there was just some old bits under the motor that were at the end of their lives and needed changing before they wrecked the engine itself. I did this and it was still running pretty well but not perfect as far as I thought...I'm no mechanic but I knew there would be some more things not right and I wouldn't know about them till I had enough money to take it to a proper Landy mechanic to put it under the microscope.

About a month ago now I had some money saved up especially for the car and I took it in for a service, tune and overall checkup...I actually asked them to evaluate the car and tell me if it was a heap of crap or a good car (in those words exactly so there was no beating around the bush). Needed to fit a new water pump and viscous fan coupling, I requested a new header tank be installed in place of the old black plastic one, and it got a fluid change and checkup. Like all Rovers too it had a few leaks which I wanted checked out.

They came back to me and said that my paranoia aside, it was in fact a really great car. The leaks apparently weren't even that bad (couple of hoses and a rocker cover gasket) and they said that for $500 they could change all the gaskets/hoses and it would basically be LEAK FREE! So all in all I spent a bit over $1000 but my faith in the car had never been better and I was happy. It still probably uses a little too much LPG but I think once I got her out on the highway it would be a different story (I've only done city driving with it).

So I say pay a professional to look over it and give you their brutally honest opinion before you do anything. They might get back to you and say that it's a horrible mess of a car and the person who sold it to you should be publicly flogged, but you never know. I hope for your sake you get some better news than you expect but at least you'll know for sure either way. I think Rovers are a lot better than most people give them credit for.
