New unidentified noise from Auto box...I think?

    She’s a 300TDI Auto.

When driving, if I lift of the accelerator I can hear a strange noise as if a belt is slipping. Not a high pitch noise but more of a low pitch belt slipping noise. Its only when I lift off and it goes when I accelerate or am driving at a consistent speed. It seems to be transmission related because it doesn’t happen when stationary or when in Park / Neutral.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

There are no belts or bands in the ZF 4HP-22 transmission only clutches. Maybe the noise is coming from the TC.
"Many times a bad transmission torque converter will produce audible noises such as grinding or whistling-type sounds that are indicative of torque converter dysfunction. A noisy torque converter, even one that still functions properly, is likely to fail and/or become dysfunctional within a short period of time"

May be wise to get a transmission shop to check it out before it lets you down.
    (I speak from experience)

    Thanks for the response mark.

In addition to this strange noise i've just noticed a new groaning noise when i reverse up mu very steep driveway. Kind of sounds like metal twisting or under tension. All points towards the Torque converter. Read a few posts about broken Flex plates which may fit the bill. The belt slipping noise could be metal sliding on metal.

Time to send her to the shop i think.

I thought of the drive plate at first but when mine went a few years ago it was a very loud clanking noise that disappeared at higher rev's. It could be that on yours I suppose and the noise will vary depending how bad the cracking is. I had my box & TC rebuilt recently and thought of changing the drive plate for good measure, I shopped around a bit for one and so did the transmission shop but they are difficult to find (at least in Sydney). I ended up keeping the same one after close inspection. If you do end up needing one and can't source locally you can try Ashcrofts UK as they have them listed.

Check the auto oil now, if its got metal in it stop driving it.

it may also be the flex plate but that usually doesnt give any decent sign of failure thats easy to spot other than noises untill it completely lets go.
